huh, I contributed hundreds of hand made GIFs to tenor when I was big into Twitch, yet again the hard work of people gets eaten up by a company and closed off. Fuck you Google/Alphabet, I hope your AI eats your fucking lunch

I feel like megacorps should have to tag their stuff.

[–] UnpledgedCatnapTipper@piefed.blahaj.zone 59 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Parent companies shouldn't be a thing. If a company buys another company, it should be fully integrated, and all branding should be legally required to reflect the new ownership.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Parent companies shouldn't be a thing

I think stopping there is best. We don't need companies buying other companies, full stop.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 9 points 1 month ago

I don't even think there should be a stock market, or companies not owned by the employees. Hell, I might have enough of these to get a bedtime Arya Stark chant going.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

Or better yet, companies should break up when they're close to getting too big.

[–] edgyspazkid@lemmy.wtf 3 points 1 month ago

Someone should find or make a website with a graphic showcase of corporations links between them.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 26 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

yea wish we got some heads up about that :/ eh I probably missed it

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

same....I am full of regret and it's far too late to do anything about it....

I regret nothing, fuck giphy and their webp bullshit

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago

At least it was fun at the time :)

[–] istdaslol@feddit.org 70 points 1 month ago

Kinda insane how much of the internet is owned by Google. Rockefeller is crying in his grave that his SO got hacked up

This news has been around for months yet I still cannot understand why they are doing this. They can't actually be thinking that anybody would want to go to tenor.com and look at gifs right???

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 month ago

It's like if my ISP decided I needed to drive to a local office in town to pick up my data packets. WTF!?

[–] marighost@piefed.social 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Discord already moved to using Klipy since early Spring or so. It's ok, I guess.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Has it? My Discord channel shows me a Tenor gif I posted just yesterday that I shared using the native search.

If they are using Klipy, it must be a hybrid solution at the moment.

[–] xistera@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When I hit the Gif button on Discord it says “search Klipy”. It has for about 4 months now.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It does for me now as well. But I've got gifs shared in my channel on 6/28 and 6/29 with the URL still hosted on Tenor, which I know came from the built-in gif browser, so it may not have been applied to all clients at the same time. Could have been in an A/B state, or maybe different app versions between OS types.

[–] Archer@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Weird, you’d think they would keep it running just for data harvesting

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Need to free up some servers to run Gemini

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Maybe they have harvested enough. Or not.

[–] InFerNo@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 month ago

Link rot is gonna be crazy

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Kids these days have sterilized the word gooner.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 12 points 1 month ago

I already made the move over to Stoat.

[–] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 10 points 1 month ago

OP speaks like someone used a tenor Gif to kill his family lmao.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I have never seen a catbox.moe gif that worked.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Annoyingly, its on one of the most common pihole/adblocker lists, and I could never find a legitimate reason for why it is.

[–] missphant@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anonymous file uploaders are pretty commonly abused to distribute malware so considering how popular catbox is that's probably how it got on there.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 2 points 1 month ago

The thing is, there are much worse services, that serve malware ads, that aren't on the same lists.

Every time i see “chud” I think: Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers C.H.U.D

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 6 points 1 month ago

People who keep all their gifs and memes in a single folder win again.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is it a bad sign that i have never heard of if before?

[–] Ajen@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago

No, most people haven't heard of it, but you've probably used it because it used to be integrated into a lot of apps that everyone has heard of.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuuuck. Isn't that what Signal uses?

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Signal uses Giphy

[–] black0ut@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

Weirdly enough, although the API was supposedly cancelled, if you have an old client it still works fine. Currently writing this as of 2026-07-02T04:34:00Z.

Discord's gif picker doesn't go directly to Tenor, it passes through their internal CDN, so it may be some caching. But it's still funny that it works.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Where are you hanging out that has you so bitter over gifs? Find a better community or friends.

I swear to god 90% of gif usage is for the worse

[–] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

On a related note why are you so bitter over people being annoyed by the enshittification of yet another small source of joy in this hell world?

Is this that sour grapes thing? Or do you have an issue with people using reaction gifs to convey a concept that's either too convoluted or requires too much context to type out?

For example, this entire comment could have just been;

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Been using Fluxer, seems to use Klipy over there

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

Teams uses Tenor. It’s how I send gifs at work. RIP to me annoying my coworkers with bongo cat.
