Jokes on them, my wallpaper is already plain black

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 9 points 1 hour ago

Way ahead of ya, champ.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 18 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Skip ~~today's~~ Windows ~~11 update: it breaks cursor styling, resets wallpaper, and more~~

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 4 points 43 minutes ago

Joke's on them, I've been using Linux for nearly 27 years now.

[–] DevDave@piefed.social 2 points 32 minutes ago

I have a duel boot setup and it's been a year since I had to boot into Win11. Seriously concerned with what is going to happen when I have to use it.

I love how we get windows news posted to every random comm

[–] Kaligalis@lemmy.world 18 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Thanks. Will not switch from Gentoo to Windows today.

[–] dimmuborgnine@lemmy.world 2 points 11 minutes ago

Man, I feel like I went 15 years without anybody talking to me about using Gentoo but now THEY'RE BACK! Glad to see you.

Eyyyy gentoo gang 👋

[–] AgentSeven@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 hours ago

Can't skip the update if you don't have any Windows installations.

Windows Mint

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 24 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

This is the Preview channel update. People that opted into it should anticipate issues.

[–] owiseedoubleyou@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

No it isn't. I have a secondary Windows machine and I got that update without being on any insider channel.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Preview is not Insider. You have to manually select Preview channel updates.

[–] owiseedoubleyou@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Still, i'm on the main branch.

[–] InnerScientist@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Here, as linked from the article:

[–] owiseedoubleyou@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 hours ago

Idk, i didn't manually download the update.

Other than “at gunpoint,” why are you still using Windows?

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Since joining the fediverse, I'm convinced the biggest deterrence for more people joining Linux are its users.

[–] fluxx@mander.xyz 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

True, People can be obnoxious. But you should still try it at some point, there is something to the hype.

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I have tried it, and I had more issues with my previous laptop on Mint than I have currently on Windows. Still I'll look at it again once I need a new one.

Edit: So I guess in my case the users didn't deter me, since I wasn't really interacting with the community at any point. I think it's probably more of a threadiverse user thing than a Linux user thing. And yeah I can be obnoxious myself, I just don't expect it to yield results.

I use it for work (AD admin, kind of have to unless I want to change careers while I'm halfway to retirement), and at home I use it for a machine that's dedicated to running simulator games (I can get the peripherals to work in Linux for the most part, but a lot of the setup for them is Windows only and since it's only used for that, I'm currently just sucking it up there... Though I'll need to keep something around even if I switch that system since some of them can only be programmed via Windows, like my VKB flight sticks)

I tried installing Linux but something went wrong and it didn't work.

I know better than to ask for basic computer help in a Linux community.

Need Adobe software for work. Want to play online games that have anti-cheat. Also like to run mods in my games.

I have a shitty old laptop for travelling that I'll try to install Linux on this weekend, since I only need Firefox on that.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 hours ago

Heavily modded Skyrim

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

I'm hesitant to leave 10 because there are a few games I play that don't support Linux, and I like em too much to quit if 10 still works. However, once support officially ends forreal, I will say goodbye to those games o7 11 will never touch my outers.

At work tho they had to upgrade to 11 in the office, and since it's retail the office isn't really that important but 11 is so poorly designed the computers barely run anymore

I have a 60TB disk pool with DrivePool software and have no place to put my data and create a Linux based pool. I have to wait until I can afford a new 20TB disk as a temp storage.

Unless there is an easy way to convert a DrivePool to mergerfs etc.

Legacy windows projects development. I switched to Linux and run windows as virtual guest with minimal usage though.

I have more interest in starting a WatchWindowsDie group than I do in going back to Windows, but it seems like the entire internet is already on the beat.

[–] Quazatron@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Windows will not die so easily. Two reasons: 1. Too much money behind and around it. 2. Sheer corporate inertia. 3. As long as there is no competition to the AD/Entra ecosystem, companies will buy it. Ok, three reasons.

The French Gardia switched over to an in house Linux distro and now a lot of governments and companies are watching to see what happens.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 13 points 7 hours ago

Glad I got out when I did.

Or, y'know, just install Linux?
