it's really sad that so man people lingered on this dogshit website after that fuckhead elon musk bought it

[–] halezinflames@lemmus.org 74 points 2 days ago (2 children)

"But I won't be able to market!!!" The Onion got more coverage after leaving, you have no excuse

[–] bountygiver@lemmy.ml 32 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ya, people follows where the content is, also people are lazy, so if you still post on x your followers will not migrate and you will see worse numbers on the new platform, but if you fully stop posting on x your followers will follow you to the new platform (you will not hit old numbers but those are inactive followers anyways).

[–] halezinflames@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago

Pretty much lmao

[–] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Lol "that one company that's worth millions of dollars that you remember from your teen years did just fine after they left that website and bought another company that was worth millions with a name we all recognized since our early 20's! If they can do it, why can't you??" You also gloss over the fact that they relied on Facebook and Twitter to get the recognition they ever got in the first place.

Come on now. Surely you understand if you're selling wooden bowls you carve yourself or a local lawn care company and need to have the largest presence for that Facebook and twitter are virtually the only way. Sure there's radio and building your own website but all that costs money and time. If you don't have that you are forced to use Facebook and Twitter.

Unless you like running a business that performs poorly compared to the competitors around you, that is. That is still an option!

I hate twitter and Facebook and reddit and all that shit too its a privacy nightmare but everyone acting like you can do just fine with a business without that without having astronomical cost increases and headaches along the way is lying to themselves and everyone else around them.

I want everyone to leave too but acting like a pompous ass about it and saying "you have no excuse not to succeed without the tools others around you succeeding are using!" Isn't the way to do it.

I'll gladly judge someone not willing to leave the nazi pedo site just because they might lose a few bot followers, sorry. Look at Wukko, the guy behind Helium Browser. All he does is whine that people don't like AI and act condescending towards people who raise issues about the project. It's really bizarre the way that guy acts.

Could Xcancel become a search engine with an "AI" that provides all the info in the destination pages? I.E. use the Google model?

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Fucking apartheid beneficiary again.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

To me it is Twitter and all of twitter’s content is plain trash no matter where you read it from.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes i look at my shit because it can say something about my health. Despite the content being trash, doesn't mean there can be no value in being able to access it.

Leave. It sucks since so much info and live news is often stuck there but people need to realize ot is a dying platform, the less traction any of its content gets, the better.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 76 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's not an option because I'm not on X in the first place. I used xcancel to access information from government agencies and some brands since you cannot browse X without an account, and I deleted mine after Elon Musk bought it.

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 9 points 2 days ago

twitee.co still works as of now.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Talk to your local representatives about it.

In my area they seem to send answer alerts that link to Xitter. And you can't see alert unless you have an account.

There's no good reason why they shouldn't post those details on their own site, but they won't until people put pressure on them.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, that also means you can’t verify if a post was actually made or not there. I stay the fuck away from twitter except through nitter if I’m checking a “source”. So now that’s gone I guess

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, genuinely, and 100% seriously, if it is a twitter screenshot, it is probably better to simply disregard its veracity. Twitter screenshots are 80% dunking on random vermin, 30% bot posts, and 20% faked. (Percentages reflect the vent diagram of fuck that is twitter) I used to verify, until I realized that the people there are simply not worth knowing.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Well, the thing is like say you see someone share something outrageous that makes you ask “wait is this real? Did they really say that?” Being able to check veracity is important in the age of disinformation.

Also since I post a lot of comics I typically try to share the source. Now most artists have moved to other platforms, but their backlog might still be on that shithole. I don’t want to provide a link to that place, so being able to link to a proxy is preferred

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I hope more people take this chance to leave X for good.

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The people using this service are the ones who already left Twitter.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Or never had one, and are just checking one thing. Then twitter says you need an account to view. So you use these alternate viewing sites. I did that a few times.

[–] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If anything of consequence happens on Twitter, you'll hear about it elsewhere.

Is there actual evidence it's dying? For a while it seemed like the momentum was there but now I don't hear much about mastodon or even bluesky from normies.

[–] 1Fuji2Taka3Nasubi@piefed.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately I seem to hear much more mentions of Threads than Mastodon.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Just what we need, more market share for Meta...

Mastodon and Bluesky will probably get another boost with this, then it'll go back to how it's been.

There are far too many bots for human account deletions to really make a dent in Xitter's numbers.

[–] Zagorath@quokk.au 1 points 1 day ago

Xcancel was most useful when someone else posted a link to Twitter. That doesn't stop being useful when you personally don't use the site.

Acquire:

  1. taste

  2. books

[–] westingham@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

Self host your own nitter instance while you can: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You better start believing in alternatives. You're on one.

[–] xela@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] starik@lemmy.today 8 points 2 days ago

Appears to work, but it’s riddled with pop up ads that cover the content and are constantly reloading and jumping around. I hope xcancel comes back.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

https://bird.makeup/ should allow you to follow twitter accounts from the fediverse. Obviously interactions don't make it back to twitter, but could be useful nevertheless. See for example @franceskalbs@bird.makeup. Unfortunately twitter is full of trolls, so many instances block bird.makeup to avid spam from seeping through.

It's not an alternative to xcancel as it doesn't allow you to read feeds you don't follow, but it's good if you want to keep up to date with what users post.

Me knowing I'm building the same thing for Spotify and it allows DRM free streaming

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's kinda crazy how little I care. Although I do respect them for having provided the service for those who wanted it.

There's just nothing on Twitter that I want to read about. Mastodon is all I need for microblogs. I just wish more comic artists posted their content there instead of Twitter/Instagram.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I am not worried about twitter, but I am worried about corporations coming after other platforms; and I especially don't want youtube getting any ideas.

I deleted my account when Musk announced he was going to buy it and even then i barely visited the site or opened the app, then moved on to Reddit and now i'm here and if someone posts something short to read here then i'll read it, otherwise it's not important and not worth the effort.

[–] iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 6 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Long text is not important? Or long text on Lemmy is not important? 🤔

I mean outside of everything else it was never my bag. Feels to cult of personality to follow people. I like it by subject like forums do. I mean it makes sense with things like youtube where its content driven.

I hope this means that Shitter is starting to be in some trouble.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago

Somebody in Xitter HQ is shitting themselves because Daddy Elon just made a demand that the business must actually be profitable this quarter.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Could anyone explain what this xcancel is/does for someone who never used twitter?

[–] inari@piefed.zip 38 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It displays tweets without generating traffic to Twitter

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 49 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It will still generate traffic to Twitter in order to fetch the tweet. It's an alternative frontend for privacy purposes, so Twitter doesn't get your browser fingerprint, IP address, etc. It's all proxied through xcancel/nitter.

[–] 123@programming.dev 31 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

And you don't have to login to view stuff.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago

However it generates only a fraction of the traffic that would otherwise reach twitter, and also makes it useless as it cannot be data harvested.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Ah, OK. That's why they are pissed off.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

I stopped using Twitter many, many years ago. It was just full of shit and a place for people that can't keep thoughts in their head, no matter how uninteresting and pointless they are to speak aloud.

I've been fine. Much better than those that still use it, as far as is clear to me. Just leave. It'll only be an improvement.
