Yeah people don't understand the math behind these things. They are statistical models, like demographics or climate models. They are interesting and potentially useful, but not necessarily useful for the things we are trying to and want to use them for. They can predict certain things and trends very reliably in a general, high-level sense, but they will get the details wrong if you try to use them outside of their area of applicability, just like if you try to use national climate models to determine what day your basement is going to flood, it may come up with a specific date, but just as obviously that's not actually going to be correct in reality. It doesn't mean it's a bad model, it means you're using it wrong.

And lots of AI bros and AI companies are using these things desperately wrong, and for very wrong reasons. They want to sell things to you. They want to control you and manipulate you. They don't care if they're using the model properly, they only care if it's profitable for them to do it.

Perhaps being a "loser" according to the standards of nasty, cruel, selfish people who are too ignorant to realize they are any of those things is actually a sign of success and a good thing. Don't let your surroundings define your morality. It's normal that living in such an environment will skew your moral compass, but you can correct for that, and it doesn't make you wrong.

Corporations are only people when it benefits them to be. All the advantages, none of the accountability.

No, I think you should try to stand up to their criticism, educate them until they either become better, or until they choose to self-select themselves out of your life instead. We are social creatures; speech, criticism, argument, shame and rejection are key tools we use to shape others behavior. You may not get exactly the result you intend, but you will almost inevitably be able to change their behavior somehow.

Conflict is natural. We've become too socially conflict-averse and it has let nasty people thrive when they shouldn't and reinforces their attitudes to others. We need to stop tolerating other people's shitty attitudes. Make it intolerable for people who are intolerant.

Yes of course, it is what we are best at. The Torment Nexus was just the fictional fever dream of a deranged madman, until we turned our efforts towards it started building them on every street corner, and now they are just part of everyday life. I heard they got the idea from some fascinating book by a brilliant visionary, titled "Don't create the Torment Nexus".

It was reposted on a different community/instance so it shows up as new there, but is still linked to the original comments threads too. I think it's actually pretty cool how it does that.

It hasn't always been this way. They haven't always been able to say the quiet part out loud. In the past, if that had happened, they would've been punished for it and an example made of them, there would be public outcry and eventually some semblance of consequences. Nothing else substantial may have changed, they might have continued the exact same behaviors afterwards, but they stayed quiet and they were at least kept in check by the systems above them. This prevented others from seeing open corruption being tolerated and created a chilling effect on open corruption to put limits on it. It's not ideal: Keeping it quiet obviously doesn't eliminate it, but it does help control it.

Being able to say the quiet part out loud now is an escalation, and it will lead to even more severe escalations as more and more of the corruption and rot moves into the open. This is not a good sign and is not simply a sign of an organization or administration being too conservative and having too much power, this is not just being behind the times of social progress, this is something far beyond that, and it will continue to escalate.

Resistance better start increasing real quick. Because there's been very little resistance so far. New Hampshire has already been telling everyone what the choices are: live free, or die.
