I don't think anyone who ever lived in a totalitarian regime would describe it post fact as having made them safer.
They literally want to have surveillance cameras sticking out of our fucking ears and have us pay for it. And no doubt a bunch of idiots cannot wait to comply.
As other people in this thread points out, WSL is not ideal but it really saves the ass of anyone forced to use Windows at work.
I have a thinkpad handed to me from work with windows on it and all the usual restrictions. I tried for a while to use it by constantly running a virtual machine with Linux, but Windows is not a stable enough environment to host that. So in the end I just bought myself a framework laptop because nobody actually controls that I use the laptop provided by work.
Not everyone is that lucky. Canonical found a way to make their life easier. I think that's objectively great, no matter what you think about Canonical as a company.
WSL is not generally something people use because they are afraid of changing to Linux, they use it because they are not allowed by IT to change their OS.
I have a FP5 and a similar problem to you. My FP3 before it died on me so it's not much help.
I'm low key planning to find a second hand FP3 and use it to experiment with Linux until I find there are no big problems with using it as a daily driver. In practice I don't really have enough time to put into it so I'll probably keep on using /e/ for the forseeable future.
I got myself a physical code chip because MitID doesn't work with /e/. The code chip works great.
The app is probably convenient, but I am also very happy not to depend on my phone to sign in to everything.
https://bird.makeup/ should allow you to follow twitter accounts from the fediverse. Obviously interactions don't make it back to twitter, but could be useful nevertheless. See for example @franceskalbs@bird.makeup. Unfortunately twitter is full of trolls, so many instances block bird.makeup to avid spam from seeping through.
It's not an alternative to xcancel as it doesn't allow you to read feeds you don't follow, but it's good if you want to keep up to date with what users post.
