Had there not been a change of regime, we could have had an alternate future with that getting censored.

As a non-native speaker, it has always been weird to me, but this is still considered a normal, grammatically correct conversation:

  • Who is buying glasses?
  • Me.

You still wouldn't say "me am going to buy glasses".

While "I and a friend" seems to make more sense to me, considering all the weird stuff present in English, I'm fine letting this slip.

Around the selfish gene. The thing that guaranteed we survive and "emerge" became the guarantee our own combined greed and lack of empathy will be our undoing. You or I might be fine making sacrifices for the betterment of humanity; the ones who are the end result of aeons of racism, aggression, selfishness and hubris will make sure that their selfish genes get passed on, they gain wealth and power, and they ignore everyone else around, except maybe the closest friends and family. Even when they are actually burning up the planet in the process.

This is how it has worked since the dawn of humanity, even before that as animals. Most mammals ostracize their peers with albinism, leave behind or eat the weak, and the greediest fledgling will become the largest one.

We are past that. We don't need this behaviour anymore. Survival isn't an everyday challenge for the most of us. But similarly to leg hair, the tailbone or your ability to move your ears, they can't just disappear as quickly as the environment, circumstances and society have changed around us. Little children are still mostly suspicious with strangers, or people who look different from what they are used to. Our built-in vestigial BIOS settings are also the reason those greedy, aggressive human fledglings are eating up everything from others, shitting the nest, and ruining the planet for everyone.

I think there isn't a definite point where we've gone wrong. It's been a looong process.

...which sounds surprising to me, because AFAIK Polish also has separate he/she words (on/ona).

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Neither does Polish. I know at least one polaka who confuses the/a(n) 15% of the time.

You were so close. I just fold it back so that the end of the tape sticks to itself on the last 2mm. Next time you need it there will be an easy to find tab.

This is why I eat it with the wrapper still on.

As lazy as it sounds, once your thing allows other things to fit in a van, having stuff delivered to your home has a smaller footprint than everyone collecting them in their own cars.

Unless, of course, you can take it home on your bike, or something.

How about naming the town after a city in Austria, but still the Roman way? Not just once, not just twice, but

(EDIT: I'm having déja vu after the last time had I brought up the several dozen Springfields)

Those cartons are not meteor strike proof. I have bought cracked eggs in cartons several times before. That's when I started inspecting the contents before buying them.

They can crack before/while they get in the carton. Those cartons are handled by various people, transported under varying conditions. Even if they get to the shelf unscathed, any other customer might accidentally knock them off and just put them back like nothing happened.
