I love the idea of duckduckgo but man the results suck

[–] codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 53 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's extra funny because DDG is (mostly) Bing.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Its come along way since being mostly bing

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

Does it index its own data? Bing apparently sucks at that part, especially becoming filled with AI as farm results and slop videos.

[–] chalupapocalypse@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Oh, so it's great at porn then

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ddg results are so good. I dont get the hate on them. I try to go back to Google and the results are unusable.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 9 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

DDg for me is annoying because it isn't localised when I search something.

That's my own fault though for not sharing my location.

I use it for everything

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 15 points 3 weeks ago

Ddg has a dropdown for your country

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 4 points 3 weeks ago

I specifically add my location to the search when im looking for local stuff otherwise I want international results. So on google I'd search bottle store but on ddg I search bottle store auckland [suburb] because it doesnt know where i am. Or I use the !maps bang to search on google maps.

I haven't had much problems with it? Can't really remember the last time I felt the need to try a different backup search engine. And, usually, if I did, I wouldn't find what I was looking for there, either.

[–] wraekscadu@vargar.org 14 points 3 weeks ago

Really? For some reason, I really prefer DDG's results over Google's. Too much SEO spam for Google now (especially with AI).

DDG has this Reddit+ stack overflow thing that I quite like!

For generic factual stuff, I default to wikipedia. For opinions, it tends to be Reddit/Lemmy. If I have questions that are more of "tell me why my understanding of XYZ is wrong", then LLMs (the big ones) tend to be quite useful (yeah yeah, hate on me for this as much as you want).

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

It's Google ten years ago, which was already shit. They need to go further back on the timeline.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

Starpage, Qwant, and Brave search are all out there, just waiting for you.

[–] charokol@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

Sadly, this is my experience too

[–] Eiri@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I caved and switched when Google started giving me a full large chat window (not even just a small AI overview) by default when I ran a search.

Duck duck go is made a LOT better if you specify a date range before SEO became as stupid as it did. AIslop just made the seo bullshit articles/pages go from bad to fubar.

It's a 2x2 grid of vertical 2-panel comics. Could be made clearer by dividing them with thicker lines.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Or just having them left to right like a sane person. (Or... I guess you could be from Japan or some other country where you write top to bottom... But it's in English!)

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

Clearly. The questions is... WTF?

[–] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

Haha yeah it's like having a stroke 😅 I just found it online

[–] melvisntnormal@feddit.uk 2 points 3 weeks ago

It's the 4-in-1 special

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

Not the old logo... </3

[–] cute_noker@feddit.dk 3 points 3 weeks ago

I got a stroke from this. Thanks.

I found Degoog to be easier to deploy for my non-technical skills. A docker container and I was done.

Librewolf + Kagi. I've looked at SearXNG but the Kagi search results 'just work' and let's me tweak it how I want, so I haven't felt motivated to bother with the deployment.

[–] drath@lemmy.drath.ru 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Who tf ever says "google is the best"? Most chrome users are "I just want my shit to work and move on with my day" type.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

Tech bros maybe? Or people that work at Alphabet/Google?

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

DDG is a Bing frontend though.

[–] vandsjov@feddit.dk 7 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Ecosia and Qwant is where it's at - they are creating an independent search index to be able to ditch Bing and Google. And Ecosia is trying to save the planet and have so far planted more than 250 million trees - just an added benefit.

Bing is still the best search engine for porn

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 7 points 3 weeks ago

Almost too good, I find.

I tend to have safe search off, because I'm a grown up. But it can be kind of annoying to search for a completely innocuous term, only for the image results to somehow be rammed full of people getting rammed full.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Can a scientist plz confirm?

[–] Old_Jimmy_Twodicks@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Hello. I beat my meat like an unruly son. Bing is still the king of porn results.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This was a great comment + username combo to wake me up. lmao

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

and DDG by proxy

[–] dnub@piefed.social 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ecosia.org is a good search engine, right now they still use google/bing for most of their queries but are developing their own search engine. Plus they are very ethical, green energy, profits go to projects helping nature, option to turn off AI results/summaries, the list goes on..

[–] Eggman@thelemmy.club 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ecosia is not that great for privacy "Your IP address and search terms are automatically shared with our search partners, Microsoft Bing or Google, when you search." https://www.ecosia.org/privacy

This is accurately accurate.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The most accurate kind of accuracy.

Last time i checked it was powered by bing also ?

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 3 weeks ago (9 children)

No. Qwant always used its own index but it used Bing in addition as their own index wasn't finished. However, since 2025 it only uses Staan, the index developed in cooperation with Ecosia.
