As always I am so glad I don't give a damn about a good many things: GTA, collecting Pokemon cards, historical accuracy in movies etc.

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Idk man I'm not white washing history. Inglorious bastards gas lit me. I had to look up how hitler actually died just to double check.

historical accuracy in movies

It would be nice to have this occasionally.

[–] Newsteinleo@infosec.pub 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At a minimum we need some indication for when they diverge from history. To many people rely on movies for their historical knowledge.

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 1 points 1 day ago

Yes! Entirely too many movies dwell in historic facts or likeliness (e.g. two characters small talking about the big ball game- not a documented event but entirely plausible) to ground themselves then go into fantasy/ax to grind land without warning. A cyborg raptor with lasers on it's head should pop up in the corner to let the audience know we're in fantasy land.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Monkeys paw curls. History is changed to accurately reflect films.

It's why Nazis have taken control of the US.

[–] MJKee9@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Given that the victors wrote the history, for the most part, what is truly accurate when you are talking about events prior to video/audio recordings?

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah it's a nice touch, plus it has the benefit of not warping shitloads of peoples concept of history and reality as severely as we see with popular media that does throw all historical accuracy out the window.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 days ago

What about zoological accuracy in Pokemon?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 68 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

They have made up controversy to sell GTA since at least the second or 3rd game, so it wouldn't surprise me at all. Even the hacker's group sounds like some bullshit made up for the game's universe. Like LifeInvader or GruppeSechs.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The entire premise of the first game was designed to create controversy. This game was one of the OGs that local news would run stories about to showcase how violent media was bad for kids. This was in the long long ago though, when companies that served up content were held to standards

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The first GTA was originally meant to just be a racing game. A bug with how the cops chased you got them to pivot and focus on that as the central mechanic. They also leaned into PR gained by a parents group who were outraged by the violence after the game's release, but didn't manufacture their own controversy until the second game.

Just like GTA 5, I'll wait for the PC version to go on a sale.

It'll take a few years, but it's GTA, which makes it an easy wait for me.

I played the GTA5 campaign once, played maybe 100 hours of the online multiplayer with friends, and we all decided it was over hyped.

The game looks nice, it'll hopefully play well, but I just don't get the hype.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Played 100 hours

Over hyped

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Considering how long this game has been out, that 100 hours gets stretched over a long time.

[–] Orygin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

50 of those hours were watching the loading screen I guess

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I may not even play this one. There are several other games that take my interest over what I have seen so far. It's going to take a massive amount of good press to make me interested. And that's just the game itself. I am not happy that they fired all their devs and don't really want to give them money for being a shitbag company.

[–] imadethis@fedinsfw.app 5 points 2 days ago

After not being able to play the games I bought because you now need a rockstar account to log in (and their whatever behind the scenes won't let me log in, and their website quite literally just directs you around and around for hours until you get told to email the support...

nah, rockstar can suck my left heel and tell me they love, or I'm never making a decision that will put money in their pockets again.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You think the Rockstar marketing team is trying to scam people with a shitcoin? I am not shure even greedy CEOs would sign that...

I mean that and the leaker is German and has been active for a while as it seems

[–] DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Also filing legal subpeonas for a marketing campaign could get the involved lawyers fined and disbarred. Judges don't appreciate their time and taxpayer money being wasted like this.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Good point as well

[–] VoodooMischief@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

“You think the Rockstar marketing team is trying to scam people with a shitcoin?”

Absolutely. Did you forget how predatory GTA Online is? Seems absolutely on brand for them to monetize their guerrilla advertising tactics.

[–] Warehouse@piefed.ca 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Asking a federal court to subpoena Microsoft and Discord to find the hacker seems less likely for a marketing campaign, though.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If the fine is less than the profit they think they're get, I could see them doing it. Especially for a game about "crime". They've been going out of their way to build max hype to push a $100 game (because the $80 "Gta6 Diet" edition is a joke, just to say "we offered it at less than $100").

[–] SleeplessCityLights@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

It is a crazy subpoena too. It is legally known as a fishing expedition. They know there is a crime but have little information about it. So they cast this massive net to get as many fish as possible hoping that they catch the right one. It sets the precedent that you can accuse a group of people for anything and the courts will bend over for you and give you all of the information possible about them. It's very bad and scary when your rights mean nothing, and this is infringing the rights of many people protected by many constitutions.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 30 points 2 days ago

I'm really starting to think this game will suck

[–] prenatal_confusion@feddit.org 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Haven't watched the trailer yet. Or anything about gta6.

[–] Varesti@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I still haven't played GTA5.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I'm not moving on in the series until I beat the original, etc... Still working my way through.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 26 points 2 days ago

Honestly haven't seen any discussion of the game outside of the leak drama, so it's plausible.

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Nah, I'm standing by this conspiracy as well. Something is off about it - the timing, the fkn amateur "hacker" etc

Plus rockstar have drummed up drama in the past to promote their games

[–] Warehouse@piefed.ca 4 points 1 day ago

https://kotaku.com/take-two-subpoenas-microsoft-and-discord-records-related-to-spread-of-gta-6-leaks-2000726633

They asked the New York federal court to subpoena Microsoft and Discord to find out who the hacker is. You don't do this for a viral marketing campaign.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's not like they even have to market it.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You are not the only one... I wouldn't be surprised, Rockstar is completely shameless.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

was literally about to send you this, of course you're here already

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I haven't played 5 yet, maybe I can get it on sale

[–] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe it's time to replay Vice City again.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

It's always a great one to play and you can even play it on the toilet now (oh wait, for like 14 years now, the mobile port is now older than the original game was when the mobile port came out)

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Don’t bother, it’s a boring game.

[–] sit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)
