You look around and realize your surrounded by the most articulate and interesting people in the world, and inside you know your just a lame jerkoff who has no business being there.

Im in college rn and this is exactly what it feels like when my smaller classes do introductions.

I recommend making yourself more interesting.

For example, you could say that you're a free software enthusiast who's so passionate about open source software, you use an open source social media app instead of the corporate spyware.

And then they look at you like you just said to be an alien...

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I used to suffer from that sort of problem, but then I started dressing like an insane wizard and being this weird all the time. Now people just expect Me to talk like an alien, so it doesn't catch them off-guard.

I should dress like a witch and when someone ask me what i did to fix their computer i can just answer "magic ✨"

The best is the first person to start it sets the template for everyone else.

People act like they are at gunpoint. It's perfectly fine to go “Hi, I'm Dusty, nice to meet you.” And leave it at that, no matter how much the extroverts before you ranted on about themselves. In my experience 99% of the time people feel just as apprehensive as you and don't really care. Now, if the entire point of the meeting is to introduce a team, please, just fucking cooperate. I've worked with too many people who refuse to participate on the meetings, and they make workflows so unnecessarily obstructive. I want to finish my task and go home as well, just pay attention to the communication tools, I don't care how much of a mystery you like to portray yourself as. Specially if our work depends on each other's coordination.

Like anyone gives a fuck and remembers anyway

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

The point isn't for everyone to remember everyone, with n * (n-1) links being made.

The point is for each person to be able to remember one person. Usually the hot chick.

Because extroverts rule the world and we just live in it

Cool beans, cool beans

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

A few of these wombles have escaped the confinement of the office and discovered the outdoors, and will do this at the start of an activity.

And I try and veto that whenever possible.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I do it for 2 reasons:

  1. Make sure everyone is supposed to be there. I've had people show up to meetings that weren't supposed to be there and everyone else thought they were with one of the other groups in on the meeting.
  2. Figure out if the other side tried sneaking in a lawyer. If they bring a lawyer, we need to bring ours.
[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

Also, it helps to know who you are talking to.

[–] wieson@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

Only name and responsibility for this project. I want to remember the one person who is on the client side of my interface. The rest I may remember, but don't need to.

Psychologically speaking, check ins at the beginning of the meeting are important to create connections in the group and make people feel more comfortable to speak up later. It's literally just behavioural science.

[–] YashaB@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Courtesy? I mean come on, is it really asked to much to say your name and why you are part of this meeting?

[–] socsa@piefed.social 5 points 3 weeks ago

If I don't know you already it means this meeting should have been an email

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"hi, I'm midnight, and I'm here because all you fucks need me, unfortunately. I'm also not getting paid overtime for this 7am meeting..."

[–] katze@lemmy.4d2.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean come on, is it really asked to much to say your name and why you are part of this meeting?

Yes.

It makes the meeting artificially longer; if we would just get started, we would save save. Doing this is just being disrespectful to everyone's time.

[–] YashaB@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, yes, because save save the precious business - hours we must. Let's not spoil them with some human interaction.

[–] katze@lemmy.4d2.org 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

spoil them with some human interaction.

How is that "spoiling" someone?

[–] YashaB@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

spoil /spoil/ intransitive verb

To impair or destroy the value or quality of; ruin.
"spoiled the dish by adding too much salt; spoiled the party by getting into an argument."
To harm the character of (a child) by overindulgence or leniency. synonym: pamper.
Similar: pamper To plunder; despoil.

"I'm sippy cup and I don't know why I'm here" has never failed to both get a laugh and be absolutely true.
