Objectively yes, it was. The surveillance alone is reason for ye olden days (1999) being far superior to now. Even still, you could mostly insulate yourself from the modern world by only using pre 2015 or older tech and not having a smartphone. Only use Gemini protocol or gophernet for internet.

This is mostly how I live on weekends. Just hang out on irc if you need social contact.
