How do you feel about ads in your search?

Well why would they prioritize memory constraints? It has literally no change to their bottom line.

Say you're paying an engineer 100k a year. Reasonable cost in a western country, US based would be more like 200k+ when taxes and everything are involved. Tell him to spend 20% of his time optimizing memory usage.

Now how much money are you spending to increase your userbase by maybe 0.01% (there can't be that many people who'd uninstall software they need just because it uses more RAM than they'd like)? And that's for every engineer you tell to spend time optimizing.

Memory consumption only becomes important to the authors of the software when it's on the backend and you're serving so many users that your annual server costs get into millions, at which point you can save enough money that optimization is starting to be worth it.

It sucks, but it is what it is. For everyone to start building super optimized software again, we'd all first have to move to 512 MB Pentium 4 machines so using more memory would actually mean lost revenue via lost customers.

They very much can when they've been proven to collude to keep prices up.

If any one of them started making more RAM, they'd make a lot more profit than the other two. If all 3 did, they'd all still make a bunch of profit, but not as much as right now. They have an agreement that nobody ramps up RAM production so everyone gets to keep super high margins.

Yeah turns out that RAM is cheap and dev time is expensive. Compared to what devs charge their employers in western countries, RAM is STILL cheap.

With libre software, your employer isn't bleeding money for every day spent on optimization.

Uhhh clearly it's selling, stores stock it and don't discount it much. Nobody loves keeping around things that don't sell.

Look, I'm no fan of ads, but... It's a free service that costs an ungodly amount of money to run. They've gotta make money somehow.

Of course the whole running it at a loss for a decade thing means they had to go the enshittification route. Could've had more ads and a subscription option long ago but they wanted to lull us into a false sense of security first :/

Misleading title sorta, or oversimplified. It's PS5 selling less than any other PS before it.

I'd even argue that generative AI is machine learning, except the learning stops when the training does so it's not learning continuously like ML in the classical sense.

I upgraded my CPU this year and I actually still haven't reached the top of the line yet (currently 8 cores, but I could go 5950x for 16). But I wanted to buy more RAM last year and didn't, so that's fun.
