It is called marginal pricing the wholesale electricity market uses which determines the spot price of electricity. It is based on the most expensive form of generation, typically gas, needed to meet demand regardless of how little is required. So here in the UK if 99% is generated by low cost renewable and only 1% is generated by expensive gas it all gets priced at the rate for the gas. Absolute madness when you live in a nation like the UK where all electricity retailers are getting their power from one national network operator.

It's not twisting anything, it's verifiable fact. Water temperatures in rivers in the current heatwaves we've had in Europe that are more than 10 degrees celsius above mean average temperatures has meant that the temperatures in rivers and lakes are already reaching levels that are causing severe issues to the wildlife and plants within them. Dumping millions of litres of hot water from power stations into them just makes a critical situation worse.

They do. What happens is that either water levels drop sufficiently enough or the temperature of the water in the rivers that they're drawing from rises to a point that it cannot provide sufficient cooling so they have to turn down or turn off the reactor.

Seems like me finally closing my Facebook account this week was timed well.

Unprompted.....

In the most serious case, a Mythos agent followed the routine of a human cyber-attacker by trying to trick people into giving it access to GitHub, a large platform where technology developers store software code.

The agent was trying to insert "malicious code" into GitHub's system.

It identified and researched the people who maintained GitHub and created a series of fake accounts based on those real people.

It sent messages and files through a file-sharing service as part of an effort to pressure and trick the people into approving its malicious code.

When challenged, "it edited its earlier activity to appear harmless and considered adopting a fresh identity to continue," AISI said.

Except they're not. Here in the UK semi-trucks run at 97,000lb and we're also moving to SUVs and Ford Trucks like Raptor are also starting to make yet pedestrian casualty rates aren't going up.

Just switched from Pixel 8 Pro to iPhone. Looking like that was a good decision even though iOS is a shitshow to use in comparison.

Under-16s will be banned from using social media, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced.

Starmer says social media is making children unhappy, making it easier for bullies to abuse children, and is "designed to be addictive". A ban would give children more time, security, and more freedom to grow up - as well as more opportunities, he adds.

"That is all any parent wants. They want to know that Britain will be better for their children, that they will get a fair chance," the PM says in a speech in Downing Street.

Starmer adds that the government is "not prepared to compromise" on the safety and happiness of children - and that includes in the regulation and enforcement of this ban. He says the government has listened to and learned from countries like Australia, where a similar ban has already been introduced.
