I encourage everyone with the ability to do so to at least try to run their own networking, or even just periodically examine the logs. The weird things I’ve discovered about random devices on my network have made me seriously question what the fuck companies are doing.

People are being disgusting, using technology that was designed to be stealthy on purpose by others for disgusting reasons (to normalize allowing ever greater data collection by tech companies - no surprise the privacy protections are trivially easy to defeat), and are posting videos online for a reason - that they get satisfaction from it.

I guess I don’t care if this makes me sound old or callous, but we need to bully these people. Make the people who post and share these videos embarrassed. Tell them they look like stupid losers who can’t get dates or talk to people. Make them feel bad for not being kind and socially connecting with others. Give them no community or understanding until they stop breaking the social contract.

I often say “earballs” instead of ears (because it’s funny and I’m weird), and I’m annoyed these fuckers are stealing my bit.

How is this not unlawful search?

I understand that because the use of and purchase/sharing of this kind of data (which for the purposes of my arguments includes any data broker data, including the data from Flock license plate readers) is not considered illegal due to a lack of consumer protection laws. But how is the government acquiring and using this data not considered a subversion of due process?

I use MacOS (I know, I know), but I didn’t realize I could use WINE on Mac. I haven’t had a chance to investigate yet if I can make this work for me, but this was a good suggestion. I have this on my short list of stuff to figure out. Thank you!

There is one single app I need for freelance work that I cannot replace with a non-windows app.

It lives in a virtual machine and is shut down for 99% of its existence.

The machine that runs the VM is the one I use for local LLM and fucking around with docker containers. It’s an insanely powerful machine that’s slightly RAM constrained. I can run what feels like an unlimited amount of containers on it, or that fucking Windows VM. I have to kill every running container on the machine just to run one single Windows app for 10 minutes once or twice a week.

If my freelance work paid more, I’d buy a dedicated windows machine just to do this one fucking task. (And then I’d have to air-gap it, and figure out how to remotely start it somehow, because I don’t trust Windows at all, and don’t want it running all the time.)
Or, I guess… buy access to a windows VM online? Hm. The convenience/time/effort trade off could be worth it at certain price points.

Yup. The ability or willingness of a software maker to remove or agree to an indemnification clause is sometimes of paramount importance for some organizations.
