There's nothing wrong with an in-game shop if it isn't predatory. For example, this made me think of Rift, where you could fully appreciate the game for free, but quality of life upgrades would cost a few dollars.

It's because, at a glance, the tan coloration in the one from 1978-2003 could easily be mistaken for a cornucopia.

There's no reason these need to be "smart". I had a pet feeder with a timer over a decade ago. It just needed batteries.

Funnily enough, not having a car is the best way to always be deeply impoverished and never be able to get ahead in most of the US because you can't get to a job. Or the grocery store. Or a doctor. Or anywhere else without it being a massive hassle and investment of your limited resources.
