Fair enough. I strictly use it for comms in games I play with friends. I'm not active in any other communities and I'm certainly not paying for nitro. I'd like to migrate but getting everyone to do so probably won't happen. I could maybe convince my closest game friends, but I have a clan in a game with people I don't know that we use discord to chat. Definitely not getting all 40+ to move.

What solution did you end up on post Discord? If you had a group of people you communicated on Discord with, did you have luck migrating them out? I'd like to move, but my use is already really minimal and I feel like getting my friend group out is going to be difficult to non-existent in some cases.

Also Bethesda. Skyrim has been released so many times since 2011.

I think it had the opposite effect. I believe the recently didn't renew their contract with Google because they were upset people weren't coming to the site, just getting answers from Gemini. I could be wrong, but I thought I read that

Off-site resources aren't by default a cloud solution. The differentiation is mainly in a cloud, it's a cluster of shared resources that host virtual machines and are connected through virtual networks. Having a dedicated server to host your stuff on is just remote hosting. A company can setup and host their only cloud infrastructure if they want.

To non IT people, the difference between interfacing with something in the cloud or a dedicated hosted setup doesn't exist. If they post a comment on Lemmy, that's may be hosted in a cloud or hosted locally on a server somewhere. If they are storing pictures in Away, then that is cloud storage.

So their is a distinction on the back end mostly, but it's just the way resources are hosted and shared, so the front end would be the same regardless.

That's never going to change. It's cloud infrastructure. It's not a company specific term, it's industry wide, and convincing an entire industry to arbitrarily change what we call something won't happen. Even changing from master to main isn't the case everywhere, and main is the default now.

Also, 'the cloud' is both easier to say and remember than 'upstream processors', which in itself isn't an accurate name for cloud resources, really just one resource.

It could be that the software isn't accurate enough to be evidence on its own. Similar to how identifying someone in a lineup is notoriously inaccurate. They may be able to use it for probably cause in a search warrant, but without other supporting evidence, they may not have a case.

Facial recognition has an inherent bias as well, or at least it did not too long ago. It was mostly trained on white people, so it's accuracy with non whites was really bad. I'm sure the training data is far more robust now, but that doesn't necessarily mean better.

Yep, which is why I don't think that 6 hours away is necessarily too far for an amber alert. I think that's extra true in a place like texas that's so large that it may take a driver about 6 hours to get to a larger metro area from their starting spot. Maybe not 6 hours, but not a 30 min jaunt.
