Honestly I can't tell the difference with the launcher compared to what shipped on the phone, not that I used that very much - but I upgraded from an LG G8 and the whole thing looks very familiar. The camera app feels very much like the one on my LG but I suspect someone who is more into photography than me would be frustrated by it. But the standout awful stock app has got to be the clock, the ui is clunky and feels awful to use, the tones are obnoxious, and it has all the visual flair of a C student project.

I've mostly just replaced it with the alarm on my smart watch.

I finally replaced it but until several months ago I was watching a lot of YouTube on a ~2018 Amazon Kindle tablet... one of the reasons I replaced it was because YouTube on Firefox chugged on that thing near the end. NewPipe managed to get like six more months of semi-acceptable use out of it (I was still sick of the ads and preinstalled app-ads) until I found a good deal on a used Pixel tablet locally. A dedicated app is less bloated than the web interface, but I guess this is more of an argument for NewPipe and other third party frontends than Google's still bloated app.

Mostly unrelated, but anyone got suggestions for repurposing an old Kindle fire? Might be interesting to see how much ADB can debloat it and maybe turn it into a retro emulation device since I don't need a digital photo frame.

I bought a new in box old stock Pixel 9a for $350 USD a couple months ago from eBay. This was just before that Cop City protestor gave a duress password to border patrol, I wonder if that caused a bit of a spike in demand for old Pixels?

Wasn't there some historical leader with mad beef with someone they were at war with, she requested several pigeons as part of peace negotiations and she released them to fly back carrying burning twigs and absolutely destroyed the enemy city?

Edit: Added a necessary word lol

We're on World right now, they kinda frown on that kinda thing here, might be why they didn't link it.

I really should watch the Odyssey; I immediately knew what movie and scene this was from without even having seen the trailer because it lines up so well with what I imagined from reading that scene, that's often the sign of a very good adaptation.

My dad used to own a Miata, he was unable to get on and out of it with the top up. I loved borrowing it when I would visit because I'm a foot shorter than him and never had any problems with it. There's some perks to being short.

Quite a few banking apps work on Graphene OS. My bank isn't listed and it works on Graphene too (I really should contribute to that list). The big downside is probably having to buy a new phone for it but if you need to upgrade anyway it might be worth considering. The only app I've run into so far that didn't just work was the Target app but it works with a bit of tinkering. I've only been using Graphene on my phone for two weeks now but all of the apps I used on my old phone are on here and working.

Shout out to the local sex toy shop who runs the eviction relief fund here in Minneapolis, in response to the Gestapo rolling in. The sluts will save us!

He also kept digging when the backlash hit. It wasn't a great look, and the initial take was, at best, deeply naive.

That said, I'm actually considering switching to Proton over this. I think his statements are nowhere as bad as this Mullvad donation and I'm in the slow process of de-Googling and Proton's other offerings would be a huge step towards that. It probably isn't great to have email and calender and passwords and cloud storage and VPN all through one company, but it's better than two with one being Google.

Definitely. It'll run Stardew Valley and Rollercoaster Tycoon! I bet it's even powerful enough to run Doom!

(Why is it that I spent way more than them on a gaming laptop in 2022 and I still mostly just play Stardew Valley?)

There's a lot of "but why don't they stop if what they're doing is so unpopular?" comments and I've got one more explanation (on top of the obvious money and technofaschism points).

A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the "Rationalist community" and possibly believe in Roko's Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn't actively work to bring it about. Someone want to link the BtB episodes about them? I know the Zizian episodes go into it but iirc they've got a dedicated series about these weirdos.
