Both of you, straight to DadJail. Unacceptable levels of Dad

Wait wait...let 'em ~~cook~~ grill. This is a dad-positive space. 😂

The maniac who got a spouse, kids, a dog, two cats, and hamster, and also gardening, does woodworking, and also rearing farm animals:

Years ago I was tempted to get a 4TB SSD for data storage as prices were getting reasonable and I just kept thinking wait for it to drop a bit more. Now 4TB HDDs are pushing the same price SSDs were back then. Fuck.

My PC is currently 512GB SSD boot drive and 3TB LVM from a 1/2TB HDD. Those HDDs are getting pretty old now so I probably should replace them at some point but I resent having to pay the prices they ask right now. Maybe I should just uninstall half of my steam library that I realistically won't play any time in years or ever again. Reduce my storage needs. Data backups only take like 50GB or so.

[–] bennypr0fane@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah real backups are typically not even half of what we use, I bet about 2/3 is useless junk we could never be arsed to delete

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

Second hand SSDs are getting kinda tempting tbh. But even they have seen their prices rise. Wish I bought all of the 512GB ones I saw for £10 each now. Got plenty of SATA ports, why shouldn't I use them?

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 4 points 1 month ago

In late 2024 I managed to get a good MVME 512GB SSD for less than 40€! It also clearly has a DRAM cache because it's really fast. That SSD probably costs at least four times as much now, I should have gotten another one

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Pretty much 50% of the reason I started selfhosting

[–] uuj8za@piefed.social 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah! Photo storage was the reason I was able to get my brother into self-hosting!

[–] SmoochyPit@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Found u/gedaliyah’s sibling

[–] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cat owner. 128gb phone.

Just download the images to your machine. I'm not paying that much of a markup after they removed micro SDs from our phones.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is the way. I just auto upload them to my NextCloud. That being said, I just shared the meme, I didn't make it. 😅 Hahaha

I agree people getting like 2TB phones is kinda ridiculous!

[–] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 4 points 1 month ago

Completely understand.

I'm going to be grumpy about the micro SD card slot removal for a while.

And don't get me started on wired headphone jacks.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is per-cat, having 2 doubles the storage requirements

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

How the hell i'm suppose to afford 84 TB of storage in this economy. 🤣

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The greatest thing selfhosting ever did was give me an easy way to search "cat" in immich and get rid of all the stupid, useless photos of places and people. Just get me to the good stuff, man.

[–] wieson@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago

... Gets pictures of Cat Stevens and Cathmandu (misspelled)

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Is immich stable these days? Looked into it a number of years ago and it wasn't yet

[–] Ghoelian@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They do have a stable release, and so far I have not had any issues at all running the server on pretty shit hardware, even with machine learning stuff turned on (as long as ram doesn't run out, which my 8GB definitely did after I added a 10th container app).

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Excellent, well that'll be good when I finally get around to setting up a server!

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Year, it's fantastic. Or at least has been for the last couple of months.

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Good to know :)

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's cool! I personally use NextCloud Memories, and I'd really like if the recognition component got that reliable!

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

I mean, it's tolerable, and great for self hosting. Searching for "cat" definitely gets some false positives and straight up wrong choices. The facial recognition ML is pretty good, though. It's kind of wild to suddenly be able to watch family members or myself age by searching for one person and scrolling through 2 decades of photos.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Are we forgetting about the porn needs of single people?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

Are you really missing all that much if it's not in 4K? 😬

ProTip: I hear 2D animation compresses really well. Do with that information what you wish!

[–] bennypr0fane@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's what I'm kind of outraged about. These crazy prices are taking computation out of consumer's hands again and placing them back in the iron grip of giant corpos.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

iron ~~grip~~ claw

ftfy

[–] GhostFace@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't really take that many pictures of him. He finds it rude.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

That's fair and considerate.

I basically consider picture rights to be rent. They loaf around, get free food, shelter, snuggles, brushing, among other perks.

In return I get to take silly pictures of them! Although usually they're flattering and regal portraits. :D

[–] bennypr0fane@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What do you guys use to self-host your cat photos? Does your solution include (cat-) face recognition?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I personally use NextCloud Memories! It works really well. Unfortunately two drawbacks:

  • Its recognition can mostly get "animal" but I imagine it misses a lot of "cat." I also put in custom tags "Cat - (name)" to differentiate, but that's not automatic and I'm sure my collection is imperfect.

  • Facial recognition; it only recognizes like the first face it sees? It can't handle multiple people in an image. Really strange. The face recognition is also currently limited to humans. Big whomp-whomp!

But as for integration with the rest of NextCloud, Memories is quite fantastic and I like it a lot. :)

(If you wanna mess with NextCloud, I HIGHLY recommend the AIO (all in one) install)

[–] bennypr0fane@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks for the hint! I've heard that self-hosting Nextcloud is a gigantic handful, it's supposed to need a lot of attention to maintain?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

Personally I've had a lot of luck running NextCloud AIO on OpenMediaVault, on my little server machine running ProxMox.

The nice thing is you can keep your data drives separate, and take snapshots of the OpenMediaVault virtual machine before you update NextCloud, and if something goes wrong , you can roll it back without losing stuff stored on it!

(Sorry I could be better at describing this stuff)

AIO makes it a lot more convenient to maintain. It has a backup solution built in using Borg Backup, and it automates updates when you tell it to update. Usually the update process is a bit more...fraught and hands-on running bare metal.

NextCloud can back itself up as mentioned, but I use Proxmox's snapshots in case the little web portal to do all that breaks, which has happened before. But super rarely!

Haha sorry this is a bit of a mess, I'm at work right now XD

[–] CareHare@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Now make a graph for kids. I swear my wife has a couple of 4TB SSDs filled to the brim. Her mother might even have more.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Newly dadded myself. Storage prices better start falling fast 😭.

[–] CareHare@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Congratulations! It's a tiring, but wonderful journey. Or at least the start is. I'm only 4 years in, but it's the best my man.

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

16GB (decimal).

Modern day Android is outrageously bloat, it takes up half of that. It also needs 64GiB RAM to compile. Anyways, my everything else is around 7 gigs. I didn't fill it up fully because the Android package manager refuses to update or install anything when a certain amount isn't free.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I dont get it...why does the cat impact storage needs?

[–] Zozano@aussie.zone 8 points 1 month ago

Cats are notorious data hoarders. My cat made me buy a 4 bay enclosure today.

[–] wish@lemmy.cafe 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You would take many photos of your cat being cute or doing stupid things

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

I have two cats an not a single photo...WTF would I need photo's of them, they're right here all the time.

[–] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

To show your cats how dumb and cute they are. You might actually own dogs.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

they're right here all the time.

Well, I don't wanna be dark but uh...that won't always be the case, as I've experienced too often recently.

So, it's nice to be able to look back. Our own memories are quite unreliable. :)
