Sounds like it worked

[–] djhandsome@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Why do people use signal? It has one centralized server and phone number registration. There are many better alternatives.

[–] Logical@lemmy.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

Which ones are you thinking of? Out of the options I am aware of, Signal seems to be the most secure, most reliable, and most privacy respecting messaging app in this category.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 37 minutes ago (1 children)

It used to be an SMS client too, to help get people on board. Now they expect you to either memorize which people use which protocols, or just use SMS.

[–] randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 1 points 28 minutes ago (1 children)

It's not that difficult to remember which people use which messaging apps. I use Signal, Line, Whatsapp, Matrix, Telegram, heck even Instagram DMs with different people. I try to push people to Signal whenever I can though.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 24 minutes ago

Yes it absolutely is! I just use Signal and SMS, and the Signal users seem to be dwindling.

[–] Lithops@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

At least i got 3 people to install Signal just for me.

[–] edgyspazkid@lemmy.wtf 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I got family, 2 friends and thats it.

[–] Lithops@lemmy.world 3 points 37 minutes ago

And thats all you need. I also have family, 2 good friends and the rest are acquaintances

[–] Pat@feddit.nu 5 points 4 hours ago

Only reason I managed to get everyone on Signal was because... uhh... Skype shut down. Yes, we used it to the end.

[–] KyuubiNoKitsune@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

I saw my mom's Signal today.. Only me 😅

[–] dragonlover@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 hour ago

My mother in law actually surprised me by asking if the family group chat could switch to signal. I wasnt going to bother her about it because i assumed shed hate it since shes bad with technology. It was a pleasant surprise.

I have friends who refuse to install Signal despite having 10+ friends who I know use it. Big ups to ur mom

[–] M137@lemmy.today 13 points 10 hours ago

I'm actually surprised by how easily I was able to get my whole family and several friends on there, it's my main messaging platform now. The only others are sms and steam chat.

Your communications can’t be compromised if you don’t communicate lol

Supreme privacy. Two can only keep a secret if one of them is dead.

[–] mountainRadish@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

I have two contacts

[–] sculptor0725@sh.itjust.works 39 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

Maybe all your contacts also value their privacy and therefore have not set signal to allow them to be discovered by their phone number

[–] Crumpled6273@lemmy.ca 13 points 11 hours ago

If that's the case, then i would be more happier to get their usernames atleast. But the situation is way worse than that. They are deeply into whatsapp.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 10 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I have notifications on when someone joins and maybe 75% of the time after I see the notification their account is "deleted" because they changed the privacy settings.

It's not the end of the world but I do wish more people wouldn't automatically pick the maximum privacy setting so that we could actually, yknow use it

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

Not picking the max privacy setting defeats the point of using it for privacy.

Classic catch 22!

i'd say default to maximum and then opt in to less and less privacy

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 15 hours ago (9 children)

I have a handful of friends and family that did actually switch, but I still have a few stubborn friends on Discord that do t see the point. Just waiting for Discord to fuck up badly enough...

[–] Crumpled6273@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 hours ago

Discord not even letting me to creare an account. The OTP never get generated. And i believe that's for good.

Many open-source developers also effectively using discord as a communication medium.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 14 hours ago

I have 1 friend who I talk to exclusively over discord DMs.

The server went down for about 6 hours when we were chatting and he made a signal account.

Then he deleted it after the outage 😭

I have a Matrix server hosted with tons of cool plugins, bots, and settings to get it as close to Discord as possible. Can’t get anyone to use it lol. Don’t care. I’ll continue to pay for it for when we truly need it.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

What I want out of a Discord-a-like:

  • Screen sharing / game sharing
  • Voice chat
  • Text chat
  • Video chat (voice + camera)

Do your bots and plugins make that possible?

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

Fluxer does all that at this point. Matrix is basically a dead end project spinning it's wheels trying to endlessly be something that it's not. Undermining it self at every turn.

Matrix is just objectively fucked till it figures out the fuck it actually wants to be.

When you can just self host a fluxer instance you just have everything no bots scripts or bullshit needed.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 hour ago

Matrix is not trying to be discord or whatever, the users try though, it's pretty much not a dead project and very useful for whoever just want a chat

[–] Reality@feddit.org 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Tell us about the plugins and bots. Does it all work with encryption?

[–] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I’m sure there are gaps in it, but the chat itself is encrypted. It’s still in flux before I try to get folks active in it, so I’m trialing a bunch of Maubot tools. It has URL previews, gifs—basic stuff.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 10 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

All the more motivation to encourage your friends to get on signal. I've had a discussion this week with someone, on fedi, who just can't conceive of getting off Meta products, like WhatSapp, because it has so much usage in Europe. Our work isn't done; not yet.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago

That person doesn't need to leave WhatsApp completely right away. They can just talk to some people on Signal and others on WhatsApp.

There's a CLI which is nice. I use it to communicate with my self-hosted personal assistant, while I'm on the go.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

By "self-hosted personal assistant" you mean LLM?

[–] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)
[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You mean a secretary who lives at your house?

[–] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

The hay day of PDAs must have been really confusing for you.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not sure what public displays of affection have to do with anything.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 hour ago

I am sure they talk about this, or smth similiar https://www.home-assistant.io/

[–] plant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago

I was not alive for this
