I remember steam when it came out. It was absolute garbage and I was like what is up with Valve trying to force me to use their stupid online platform.

Half life was fire though.

[–] Patariki@feddit.nl 1 points 3 hours ago

30...? 3...? Considering how Valve has been with 3's... I think we're in the dark ages now... /s

[–] MrOtingocni@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Psh, somebody can't do math, '96 wasn't 30... years a-

...fuck.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 56 points 14 hours ago (5 children)

And I boycotted steam's avidly for the first years because I knew what will happen and how they will kill physical games and the 2nd-hand-market (and the lending of games) for the poorer.

Caved in with left4dead2 finally and am now at like 20k games. And was right. Both markets are basically dead and I joined the devil.

At least, as long as they're not going public, they enrich gaming a bit, as they're not just a sales-platform like epic.

how they will kill physical games and the 2nd-hand-market (and the lending of games) for the poorer.

Yeah, I remember when you could buy a physical PC game and then resell it when you didn't want it anymore.. oh wait, they'd always fucking refuse 2nd hand pc games, and not even give refunds because the CD key would have been seen by someone.

[–] Batmorous@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

We need more alternatives that are similar to GOG

[–] robear@lemmy.zip 23 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Fast internet is what killed physical games.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 8 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

So, you're saying porn is the ultimate culprit? Because without porn we'd probably still be on 1Mbit or so

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Basically. It ruined Beta too.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 1 points 4 hours ago

That's a widespread myth and absolutely false.

[–] Pixel_Jock_17@piefed.ca 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah but it ain't fat enough for my streaming of movies at top quality in AV

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Then invest in fatter networking cables that can hold more signals in them.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 29 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Steam is the second less evil of the current market, the least evil is GOG

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 15 points 8 hours ago

True. Wouldn't even color gog evil at all. No DRM and it "conservated" old stuff. Buy game, own game. Even if gog is gone tomorrow, as long as you downloaded all your stuff, it's still yours.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 20 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

You can lend games on steam.

[–] Pixel_Jock_17@piefed.ca 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)
[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 9 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

You can either create a family and share games that way or you can login on your friends computer and install the game. They can then borrow the game.

You cannot play a game while your copy is being borrowed (played) by another user.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Kinda. Unless it's excluded. And if family member x plays one of my games, I cannot play a game or else they'd get kicked. Better than nothing though.

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

And if family member x plays one of my games, I cannot play a game or else they’d get kicked.

If you are doing Steam Family Sharing, then the only limit is that you both cannot play the same game at the same time. You can play different games at the same time, even if they are both from your account.

I use the feature all the time, it is great. Convinced my SO to buy a few games already as they tried it from my account, liked it, then bought their own copy so we could play it together.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Oh is that so? actually never bother witu the sharing, was adamant that it was account, not game-restricted. OK even better then. Still far from optimal. You can't just gift a game away you don't want to play anymore. That would be big.

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

was adamant that it was account, not game-restricted

This used to be the case, which is probably why you thought that. They improved the feature a few years ago.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

Ahhh makes sense. As I never really used it it vanished off my radar. And rarely things get better than worse 🥴

[–] Pixel_Jock_17@piefed.ca 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

That would be super cool if you could generate a unique code and once its redeemed its removed from your library.

That certainly would he big!

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

And it'd be so simple. Just like you said. But that would hurt sales and help you not to clutter your lib and poorer ppl get cool games too.

Sigh....

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Two people can play the same family share game if they are both in offline mode when they launch the game.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago

Obviously though, as they can't check the DRM 😊

[–] Slayer@infosec.pub 8 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

True, it was always moving that way, because greed, but better Steam than EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Epic Games and Blizzard with their shit stores.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago

Yes absolutely. Hence my closing sentence. As long as they remain a private company, all will probably be smooth. But thinking of how shit will go south with light speed once Gaven clocks out...I don't wanna think about it.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 21 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Why do we never hear about Mike Harrington? It's always Gabe Newell.
Anyways I guess congratulations to them is in order, they've done a fantastic job. I only wish they would move the company to Canada or EU. I don't buy American products or services, the only exception is Steam.

[–] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe Harrington isn't rich?

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 27 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Harrington

On January 15, 2000, Harrington sold his stake in Valve to Newell

According to Newell, Harrington did not want to risk another project after the success of Half-Life.

So apparently Gabe Newell has absolute power.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

So apparently Gabe Newell has absolute power.

And he runs Valve with ~~an iron fist~~ barely caring what the employees do.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Yes they seem to have a very large degree of freedom, which allegedly was also how the Steam for Linux client got started.
But I think he cares, AFAIK that green-light was granted by Gabe Newell personally.
He is just not breathing down their neck constantly. Which is the best kind of manager there is.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

yep. I just wanted to do a contrast based joke, since even though he has "absolute power" the allure of the story of valve is that he behaves in the opposite way.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Yes absolutely, he seems like a very chill guy. 😎

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 1 points 11 hours ago

Hey, they scanned that place for a SteamVR home world. It might be another wall, bit I think if you try clipping through it there's a Portal turret that will sound an alarm on the other side.
