Approved Bots
IMO who cares if they run fast. Of course they can. They are robots. I would prefer them if at all, washing my car or dishes.
It's pretty clear that robotics hardware has advanced way beyond the software. Do a backflip? No problem, that's a predefined routine with good secondary control mechanisms to handle the variation between requested movement and actual movement.
Pick up a dish? Well, that's going to take vision, control, understanding of how the grabber and various materials interact, and then fuse all that data into an expected result and a plan of action, then control of unexpected things like the plate slipping or the floor being slightly wet.
It's amazing how far we've come and how much it has highlighted how far we have to go.
To me it just shows that they are more focused on making it better for war stuff and less focus on how to make it more utilitarian.
I disagree, it will be worse in almost every way for war than quad copter with a gun mounted on it. Once the brains catch up, maybe, but for now it's going to trip at the first slightly uneven flooring or raised threshold, and completely destroy itself on a power cable laying on the ground.
In the future when we've boarded up all our windows, a quadcopter with a gun isn't walking up my stairs, kicking down my door and then murdering everyone in the house as it does a sweep.
No you need a lot of software to get a robot to run.
My robot vacuum is totally able to charge itself? And there are precision robots handling delicate tasks in our factories?
This is why we need to have strict regulations on the maximum length of extension cables.
I know human beings that struggle to plug in a cable. And not just because of USB superposition.
So gross motor skills is solved. Now just the fine motor skills and reasoning. That should keep them busy for another decade or two
I remember the "totally autonomous for real you guys" robot that couldn't even be Waldoed into shutting a dishwasher...
all robot manufacturers should be trying to make robots that can maintain and repair the robot. like they had one that could changed its batteries but they should change each others batteries.
