Google really wants to fuck up AOSP development and are actively hostile these days to the project. If they could easily make Android closed source tomorrow, they would.

I think they will eventually do it. Or they will make a new system and not have it be open source. And leave AOSP to languish. And this is why my next device is going to be a device that supports post-market OS.
I'm going to make sure of that before I buy it, because even if it's difficult, it will be worth the switch.
I think there might be a signal fork similar to how Mali operates that would let you use it on a Linux phone but I've only heard about it in passing and so I don't know the name of it but you might want to take a look
That's something I will need to look into as well when I eventually make the switch.
If nothing else, you can use WayDroid until you get the apps you need. I understand that it's still using Android as a crutch, but at least the base system would be Linux.
I really want to move away from Android to straight Linux phone, but some applications like, Signal Messenger, don't have a non-Android or iOS version.
Foes something like Waydroid work on Linix phones?
Yes, it does
Yeah but it sucks
Google is stealing the cumulative work of OSS contributors.
That's been Google's MO since always. They called it crowd sourcing first. Have people take photos and do reviews, then gate it behind a login. Digest the whole internet into an LLM, then steal their traffic (before that it was AMP).
