I'm not entirely convinced that Google and Microsoft are Elrond in this particular issue .. or that uBlock Origin is the one ring .. it feels like this meme is something Sauron would push to make people think the good guys are bad guys ..

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 38 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Indeed.

Make the ring ManifestV3, then it makes sense.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 14 points 6 days ago

You'd probably also need to make Firefox Elrond and Isildur google, Microsoft can be some random orc or something ..

Yeah, this is definitely a misuse of the meme.

[–] leavemealone@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I would have used eowyn vs the witch king saying that no chromium browser can stop its ads... Revealing firefox with ublock as the sword.

[–] SinAdjetivos@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Every story has two sides, and unfortunately the victor often writes the first history. However I do encourage reading the real LOTR story as told in the last ringbearer.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Is this to LOTR as Wicked (not the stupid musical) is to Wizard of Oz?

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Given that the author is a Kirill Yeskov, I think it's safe to say that it's fanfic, yes. Akin to Paradise Lost being the real story of the Bibble.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Fanfic is fine provided it's written well. I've never heard of Kirill Yeskov, but I like a good reimagining of a classic text.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah. I mean I enjoy Paradise Lost.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 days ago

I also like Grendel (1971)

[–] Zacryon@feddit.org 66 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I find the use of this meme template a bit backwards. The one ring is kind of a symbol for evil and corruption. Isildur fell for this corruption and denied Elronds request. A move that can be considered bad for Middle-Earth.

So placing uBlock in place of the ring, a thing that is wideley considered good from a user's perspective, is backwards, as this rebellious act of not conforming to the other browser's changes would then have to be considered bad.

It would make more sense from Google's or many other website provider's perspective. Because for them, ad blockers are really an annoyance. But if you are defending this position, you can be sure to have a mob of angry Lemmy users at your door step next day.

Thanks for coming to my meme analysis. It was a good waste of time.

[–] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I agree but if you forget the story lore, the actions themselves fit the meme.

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

The literal action of others begging to destroy a thing and one person saying no fits.

Any sort of context or preexisting knowledge invalidates it.

My autism will not allow this

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 days ago

I don't get it. Isn't the meme a short hand for the LOTR setting?

[–] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 2 points 5 days ago

...are we the baddies?

[–] Unpigged@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 days ago

What a weird meme considering how the story went from there

[–] Syndication@lemmy.today 40 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It's crazy anyone would willingly use Chrome and browse the internet without any protection. You'd be surprised though, as many of my friends don't even have an adblocker.

In a way I guess it's good for people like us who just block them, as the ad watchers are essentially subsidizing services like YouTube who would otherwise crackdown harder on ad blockers.

[–] kettuli@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Some people pay for youtube premium+ (or whatever it’s called) and try to be oh so smug about the quality of service they get. YT with no ads. If you pay for it. I’d rather just not use youtube.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I haven't yet met anyone who're so smug about paying yt premium, as vanced offer much much more. I paid it, have no complain, but i wouldn't be smug about it, that's just silly.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

They're the same people who go "I'm fine with the raising prices. It's a valuable service to me and I make lots of money, so I'm fine with bending over for their shareholders."

It's capitalism signaling for people with more money than values and ABSOLUTELY no sense of pattern recognition or consequences.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 5 points 5 days ago

Oh I've seen a few in the comments here on Lemmy.

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

My brother and both of my parents will not stop talking about youtube premium with me. My brother is definitely smug about it. I’ve hit all the talking points: How easily ublock origin solves ads completely. How it’s a moral imperative to deprive Google of as much money as possible. How sending one month’s fee directly to the creator or buying their merch is infinitely more supportive.

They’ve never rebuffed any of that and just kind of change the subject. And less than 24 hours later we’re back to a beamingly proud “I got YT premium man, I’m telling you it’s so worth it. You should get it!”

I think next time I visit, the first time my brother brings it up (probably within an hour of arriving), I’m going to force him to acknowledge that we’ve had the conversation before. What YT Premium does to a mf, smh.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago

"You don't get it, bro. I'm conspicuously consuming!"

-- the subtext, probably.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

My entire IT team just uses chrome because it's what comes on our work machines.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 19 points 6 days ago (7 children)

It’s weird to me, anyone using Edge or Chrome over Mozilla. It makes no sense. It’s not 1998 anymore. Surely people have had time to absorb the progression of things.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I keep chromium installed for the few times a year I visit a page that doesn't support Firefox.

[–] Raccoon_Rick@altgag.net 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The only time I ever use a chromium based browser is because Firefox still doesn’t support WebSerial

[–] gnu@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Firefox added web serial support recently (a couple of version points back) so you should now be able to avoid chromium for that use case too.

[–] Raccoon_Rick@altgag.net 1 points 4 days ago

I tried flashing Esphome or my Sonoff Dongles last week and it said the browser wasn’t supported, strange. I’ll give it another shot

[–] Grilipper54@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have to use chrome and edge for work. I was specifically told we aren't approved to install Firefox..

Chrome is convenient for getting into gmail but that's about it.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 1 points 5 days ago

Work is whatever. Their computers are theirs. It’s the home PCs that require better quality.

[–] Phantom_Feline17@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

I think its convenience/ignorance. The general population isn't as tech savvy so they'll use whatever is popular/well known.

Chrome is advertised as "the fastest browser" while edge comes with every single copy of Windows by default.

swap ublock with ads, chrome/edge with firefox/ublock then it fits the format more

[–] owl@infosec.pub 11 points 6 days ago

MOZILLDUR!!!

[–] mrsilkworm@piefed.social 5 points 5 days ago
[–] atro_city@fedia.io 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Mozilla will get rid of uBlock, don't you worry. They love Goofle way too much.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They'll get offered ad revenue sharing and it'll be too good to pass up.

They certainly have no ideological problem with following suit.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Once a proper alternative pops up, Mozilla is done for. They'll have lived long enough to become the villain.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ladybird?

I still support Firefox and I hope it won't happen.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 1 points 4 days ago

That or something else opensource that comes along. We'll see. Maybe by 2029 we'll have something, who knows.

[–] aproposnix@piefed.social 3 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Doesn't this mean that web developers will just stop developing their sites to be compatible with anything other than chrome derivatives?

[–] inari@piefed.zip 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That's already the case to some extent.

But if Firefox is the only browser where real adblocking happens, I imagine anti-adblocking will become less aggressive, which will be great news for Firefox users.

[–] farfalla@jlai.lu 1 points 5 days ago

Or anti-adblocking will be implemented as anti-firefox ?

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 days ago

Even though Vivaldi is chromium-based, some site just don't function properly or even refuse to load, but working fine in chrome, so yeah it's already happened.
