oh, but we won't charge you until your 30 days is up, you can just cancel before then!*

*please forget please forget please let us charge you when you least expect it oh god please forget about us you fucking stupid forgetful dope

-- how I interpret "free trials" that work like this. You can terminate my service when my trial is up, you do not need my credit card information until I've actually agreed to purchase the service. There is literally no practical reason they can't just do that instead -- except, of course, that it makes them more money off of forgotten trial subscriptions.

Also, you can just use a fake name, address and email when signing up so if they verify you as a first-time user on that you can easily bypass and have free trial forever. They can better use the CC details for this verification. And it's trivial to reject those single-use virtual CCs if they want to. It does actually serve a functional purpose in this case to request CC info.

Of course they definitely still hope you forget too so they can charge you.

So you're saying they're gonna leak your data too

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure where you read me writing or suggesting that in my comment...could you point it out to me?

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Because everything on the internet that demands your true identity leaks the data.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nothing of the sort is mentioned in my comment though.

But FTFY...

everything on the internet ~~that demands your true identity~~ leaks the data.

If its available online somewhere, its only a matter of time before it leaks, true identity or not. If it has potential value, it is a potential target. This is the risk when dealing with anything online. For the record, I also steer clear of free trials that require CC info, for that exact reason. I was just pointing out that it also serves an actual function and purpose in this case and isn't purely data hoarding.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out the inevitable consequence of this reasoning.

"Free trial" is enough to keep me away

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Dang, you missed out on WinRAR. What did you use to unzip files all those years?

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 1 points 2 weeks ago

You pay winrar, obviously

A hack for this: get a travelers credit card. It works just like a regular credit card, but it's pre-paid and not tied to a bank account. Use the balance you used to open the card on whatever you want, then you can use the empty (or nearly empty) card online without worry.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago

These are easily detected and rejected though.

A bit much of a hassle to save 7.99€...

Also those useful prepaid credit cards silently seem to have disappeared (at least where I live).
Had to switch to a neobroker that issues credit cards as an alternative some years back.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

You don't use the card just once. You keep it for anything that pulls this shit.

Edit; I was a dick, I shouldn't have been.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You don’t use the card just once ~~you dunce~~. You keep it for anything that pulls this shit.

FTFY so you'll seem like a decent human being to others.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, my bad. There was no need to be shitty.

[–] cdf12345@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

Get the privacy.com app

You can make temporary credit cards that only work once, lock at a merchant or have $X spending limit per transaction/per month/ or total.

So if you forget you just don’t get charged.

It’s awesome.

Yep, me too. Wanted to check it out to see if it was any good. I'm not uploading 18 euros to Google for a few trial
