I appreciate how we're all ignoring the unnaturally large lady in this meme

[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 157 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, we're not ignoring her, we're imagining a life with her

[–] uber_chicken@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I would upvote this but your currently at 69 and I didn't want to ruin that

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 3 weeks ago

We ruined it for you. On to 420 we go!

[–] Inucune@lemmy.world 96 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Nope, someone is going to have to explain this to my American brain.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 208 points 3 weeks ago (6 children)

American comics read left to right.

Japanese manga read right to left

[–] Leviathan@fedinsfw.app 71 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Jesus. Thank you, I was straight confused. Also drunk, but straight confused.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 38 points 3 weeks ago

I was gay confused 😔

[–] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

To be fair it doesn’t look like it was a comic so my brain didn’t go there either.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 37 points 3 weeks ago

Ah I didn’t realize the two on the top were meant to be read together thought it was a side by side

[–] Static_Rocket@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Thought this was supposed to be the other way around since the Japanese have Hachishaku-sama.

[–] forgetfulmeat@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'm so stupid. I saw this yesterday and couldn't wrap my head around it and moved on. Your comment proves my mind has a blind spot.

[–] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

I was about to comment how the bottom pictures are supposed to be the other way around but when I thought about it, it's correct in the manga spirit.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Seems a little dramatic to use that ultra baked incredibles picture...

If I had to guess, it would be the order in which the top row is read. Left-to-right vs right-to-left.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I didn't get it but I do now.

Left to right the woman takes the ball from a child and places it up in a tree, and there child cries.

Right to left, the woman gets a stuck ball from a tree to relieve a crying child.

But yeah that woman is like 11ft tall, I think.

I'm 8" 6'. Those are two measurements.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

You're reading it the wrong direction.

[–] LostCarcosan@lemmy.today 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

...

?you are tall How

.Winters Ethan ,you found I've

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Reading that just made me realise that that hat adds 3 feet :')

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think you've misunderstood, usually you're not meant to explain jokes but I'll act in good faith and do it anyway.

The comic uses 9"5' which is obviously meant to mean 9 feet and 5 inches.

But in actual notation ' is for feet with " for inches. Meaning that what is in the comic actually reads as 9 inches and 5 feet if taken literally.

So the way it should've been written for it to mean what it was meant to is 9'5".

As someone educated in Japanese subculture I thought it was testing knowledge of hasshaku-sama (urban legend of 8 ft tall mistress, you may also find spicy contemporary interpretation too).

[–] EldenLord@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

"Japanese subculture"

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

i thought it was about some yokai who would then haunt that boy forever or something

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think that is exactly what the dude described, if you follow the link

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Could be second layer to the meme that went over my head. Seems a lot of commenters agree with you.

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Wait isn't this a scary murder-cryptid of some kind?

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

Idk. Looks like the lady from Resident Evil to me. So maybe?

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is that her name? What are the rules with this one? They're all supposed to have rules for you to escape alive

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

It's a bit hard to find non-Japanese information since it's a relatively new and lesser known yokai, but this site does a pretty decent breakdown.

Tap for yokai

Ms. Eight Feet Tall (八尺様, Hachishakusama, also informally called Hasshakusama) is a type of main Japanese spirit (Yokai) that takes the form of an impossibly tall female specter often rumored to have a deep, masculine or an attractive, feminine voice in which she repeats the interjection "Po" [ぽ] repeatedly, and has a habit of preying on children, usually those who are nine to eleven years old.

It is said that Hachishakusama catches her victims by stalking a select child she takes a liking to for a few days or even months. After a certain time has passed, she takes the child away from their family members and their whereabouts are left completely undisclosed ever since. It's unknown how or why she chooses to abduct them, but it can be assumed that like most spirits, she can also just teleport to the child's location and take them away with her that way too.

However, there are a rare few of people who have been "liked" by Hachishakusama and lived to tell the tale. Those who are fortunate enough to have survived the spirit's wrath have to leave Japan and reside in a different country; they cannot return to Japan due to the risk of being hunted by Hachishakusama once more which also prohibits them from seeing their families by extension even under urgent situations, like a relative of theirs passing away.

Basically, don't reciprocate her affection or pity her too much. If she finds you interesting and you see a tall dark woman watching you intermittently, flee the country immediately. She stalks people to see if they're a good replacement for her lost son, and "adopts" them.

"New and lesser known yokai" i honestly always thought yokai would all be at least ~200 years old. Now it seems to me like yokai are basically just SCP that have been written over hundreds of years

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yep. Stuff like The Ring girl, the slit mouth girl, along with the ancient ones like Yukki Ona, all sorts of Yokai exist. It basically encompasses all ghosts and fairy tales, though many are taken very superstitiously and seriously.

Does Po mean anything or just like an exclamation?

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Unrelated rant about search engines
I am going insane because I was just curious if Persian speaking countries also read comic books right-to-left too, and despite the amount of specifying, my search engine just fucking insists that I am looking for the Manga reading directions. What happened to the internet?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

This cool project I found might get you that info

http://neosearch.org/

It's new, free and open source, for now

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oh I get it, Americans read left to right and Japanese read right to left.

Interesting variant of this - somebody tried swapping the reels of the movie Passengers - I think they moved the first reel toward the middle, so it starts when Jennifer Lawrence wakes up. At this point Chris Pratt is concealing that it was him who woke her up, and a lot of his behavior is very sketchy and sinister because you don't see what led up to it. Then after she finds out and hates him you see reel 1 as a flashback, and it flips the whole tone of the story. After thinking about it I really wish the director had told the story that way.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I hate how it was resolved so much.

Dude basically murdered her and in the end when given the chance to go back to her planned life she chooses to stay with him. It's apparently okay for someone sentence you to death and deceive you into sleeping with them as long as they're handsome.

[–] Solrac@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Me knowing exactly who that is, knowing full well that kid is most likely gonna be less safe from now on

[–] Sidhean@piefed.social 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure of the hidden information that changes the context of the meme from :( to :)

(if its just reading direction, then bad use of meme formats but very funny joke)

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It took me a while to get it. But yes, it's the reading direction. After realizing I like the format.

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

It's a matter of ignorance is bliss.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, but Manga reading order aside: isn't this particular woman also a yokai, and a rather malevolent kidnapping one at that?

https://en.tocana.jp/2025/09/japanese-legend-hachishakusama_entry.html

She exclusively preys on children and young adults, tapping into a primal fear of child abduction.
