The fact that you have those thoughts puts you ahead of the majority.

Most settlements are paid by insurance companies. And in small towns the judge and cops are likely friends, if not related.

I'm the asshole who will drive 4 hours just to make the cop show up to court over it.

My state doesn't have absolute speed limits, so if you can show that the speed was safe for the road conditions, you can get off.

Or just get a paralegal to file discovery paperwork. It usually costs the city more to do that than the ticket is worth, so they'll drop it.

Wasn't so hard, was it?

Apparently it's hard to understand that running a website costs money.

No, you're inferring that I'm talking about small business by mistaking my analogy.

My point was that providing a service free of charge means the company pays the costs of the service. Some companies offset this by collecting data and providing ads.

You're free to not use services that use this business model.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yes you did, in the money you didn't spend to use the service.

Without them having a different source of income, yes. Web hosting, IT staff, etc. cost money. Or if the free users outnumber the paid users to the point where the costs aren't covered by paid users.

If you run a gas station and the only people who visit just need to use the bathroom, the business loses money.

I'm not a fan of sites funded by advertising and data collection, so I don't use them. But let's not pretend that users of such sites get nothing from the arrangement.

I guarantee you everyone who downvoted me would be screaming for the murder of the CEO if a school shooting had actually happened, and it was discovered the platform sat on the information.

The process worked the way it should have. Police were alerted to a possible threat and promptly responded to verify.

The fact that this time it was just venting doesn't change the fact that statements like that should be taken seriously until they're proved not to be.

This was a teacher who was already around students when they made the statement. The response was appropriate.

Which pays for the costs associated with providing you the service without you directly paying for it.

This has been the tradeoff for a long time. If the terms aren't acceptable, then don't use the service.

They do if you're using their service without paying for it.
