The API restrictions and login requirements are meant to make scraping hard enough to make a deal worthwhile.
The article is a week old. Apple has since announced a leasing program and told The Verge the restricted mode isn't for it. They didn't say what it is for though.

Last time I got laid off I got the email that I was being laid off three hours before my call with HR. Headquarters was on Eastern Time, so the layoff emails went out around 9am ET, but I was on a team that was mostly on Pacific Time so my call was after 9am PT. And I'm on Atlantic, so this was 10am and 1pm, and I was off that day. The clueless HR person offered me a moment to collect myself at the start of the call, as if I hadn't already had plenty of time for that. Just one big annoyance.
I already had it set, and so far my LG monitor hasn't caused an LG software to be installed. But I'm on Windows 10 and I guess there's a chance this software is only for 11.

Macrumors is reporting it as an "Apple Upgrade" financing program to replace the existing iPhone Upgrade Program. Financing, not leasing.
Thor might not have even been talking about Doom in the trailer. Maybe there's a bigger bad. Maybe Doom stopped Thor's attack to say "DOOM is not your enemy, fool."
I think that's low enough to demote Musk from trillionaire back down to just obscenely wealthy.
The "anti-Proton propaganda machine" doesn't get into details like that.
