With everybody on Webkit, a vulnerability in it applies to every browser and nearly all apps on iOS. If other engines were allowed, a threat would only apply to apps using that engine.
On the flip side, keeping the engine centralized means that a single fix will close a hole in every app, keeping unmaintained apps safer.

Yeah, you used to get to know the players and come back to certain servers because of the community around them. There was one TF2 server I played on for a while that had a guy who played exclusively melee Heavy with extremely throttled Internet, causing him to teleport around. You don't get guys like Magical Fisting Heavy anymore.
It may be due to Apple users looking for alternatives to Apple Maps now that it has ads.
