This analogue is very apt.
I keep hearing everybody tell me how AI is going to be super dangerous and wipe out humanity or something but it also can't sort out my Excel spreadsheet on its own, so I'm sort of sceptical.
Years back the company I work for ended bankruptcy and I never got my final paycheck occasionally they'll contact me to give me bits and bobs of what they owe me. At this rate I should receive my final month's paycheck in full within no less than 80 years.
Jokes on there might still all that pick n' mix cups and sold them on eBay for more than my paycheck.
Fortunately thanks to VPNs I'm Canadian. I can just keep changing the settings the more and more countries implement dumb laws.
Now I'm sure some politicians have come up with a bright idea of banning VPNs and I'm just looking forward to the drama when that idea is tabled.
Yeah but even then, these are high-end server chips that require rack power supplies and industrial cooling. At most you'd want like two of them and even then you'd have to have a pretty beefy electrical connection, any more than that and the cops are going to be raiding your place thinking you're growing weed.
They're not even useful to anyone else.
Given that only another AI company could possibly be interested in AI chips perhaps we could spark some sort of war between two rival groups. Could be fun.
I feel like North Korea probably couldn't even produce the necessary power to run an AI.
What a weird crime.
This is like stealing hospital equipment, sure it's high value, but who are you going to sell it to that isn't going to ask questions?
I can see corporate espionage making sense, one AI company stealing chips from another AI company but it doesn't seem like these guys had a buyer.
I haven't played call of duty in forever, are they still massive file sizes then.
I don't think it's about number of people I think it's about perceived sense of urgency on the part of various governments. A lot of people aren't very happy with AI but the threats are all existential at the moment. The moment something happens all the people who are already not happy with AI will suddenly have a threat to point to and then the governments around the world will have no choice but to act.
Although I suspect the Trump administration will still try and weedle out of regulating anything because they have so much business interest in the industry.
