Nolan's a highly talented auteur cinematographier.

He's doing Magical Realism with SciFi pastiche, he's always got a great cast, infinity zillion dollar budget with stunning special effects.

Absolutely nothing clever or interesting to say with his work. It all ends at the level of two DudeBros snorting a line of coke and pretending to be smart.

Solaris was genuinely very difficult to follow. As an avante garde Sci Fi piece, incredible. You can draw a straight line from Solaris to a hundred Star Trek and Dr Who and Battle Star Galactica episodes. Absolutely littered with cool ideas.

As... entertainment? It was a bumpy road. The execution was rough, even by the standards of the era.

Okay, come on. The trips out to the three candidate worlds were cool. It was a very slow build up. And then the post Black Hole climax was silly.

But the middle of the movie was good.

Where, for example, a grouchy misanthropic isolated farmer is the ONLY person who can pilot this spaceship and save humanity, so he does it but grumbles the whole time.

In fairness, the enthusiastic astronauts were all reckless, foolhardy, narcissists who nearly flub the whole mission.

Going through a black hole but it's just a fisheye lens having gravel flung at it, because you forgot to budget for this particular special effect

But don't worry, you can absolutely pass through the Event Horizon in a man made spacecraft just so long as you have the singular force that defines the shape of the universe: ~~gravity~~ Love.

Trust But Verify is a good policy regardless of where your code comes from.

"AI" code is still human code in some capacity. Human code is what it was trained on. What would you do with a module you grabbed off GitHub or a script you found on Discord? Hopefully the same thing.

 

Up on the dam, almost everything that looks like a problem becomes an advantage.

The plant sits above the fog line, in thin, clear air that lets far more sunlight through.

The higher you go, the stronger and cleaner the sunlight becomes.

Cold actually helps, because solar panels work more efficiently when they are not baking in heat.

And then there is the snow, which acts like a giant mirror, bouncing extra light up onto the panels from below.

Scientists call it the albedo effect, and it can lift a mountain plant’s output well beyond anything possible in the valley.

A test site at a similar height recorded yearly output far above a typical Swiss plant.

 

The S1500 floating turbine’s operating altitude is 4,921 feet above ground level, where wind speed moves about three times faster than at the surface. The advantage of this altitude (also referred to as vertical slice) can result in a power output up to 27 times higher than a conventional ground-based wind turbine of similar capacity.

The capacity to generate one megawatt of electrical power (MW) with the S1500 system is comparable in size to what small wind power turbines normally generate (a conventional 328-foot-tall wind turbine), while the footprint of the S1500 system is significantly smaller. This amazing power density shows the efficiency benefits of being able to access high altitude wind power resources by new and innovative airborne platforms.
