For an AI to troubleshoot problems with your computer (something it's really good at today), it needs content like reddit's. Books don't and won't detail weird software issues and their workarounds. One the current training set becomes irrelevant to whatever software people are running, this is a specific area where Reddit's data is way more valuable than books.

Of course Reddit locking down access to that information leads to fewer people contributing. Reddit is dead, it's just struggling to go down.

I wouldn't call WSL service, Linux environment integrated into Windows is more accurate. With WSL 2, Linux actually runs using a lightweight virtual machine with a real Linux kernel, while still being tightly integrated with Windows. It's a proper Ubuntu (or whatever you want really) installation that you can run a production server off of.

Not really. Microsoft did WSL to keep Linux users from leaving, and to gain back Windows server share. Both worked, but keeping me in Windows by allowing me to use Linux means I'm still using, expanding my usage, and becoming more dependent on Linux.

It's exposing Windows devs to Linux, and getting people using it. Every WSL installation of Ubuntu is an installation that likely would never have been done otherwise.

They make a very poor job of highlighting something so important in a dense page detailing how to do what they recommend you don't.

They don't recommend against it... It's a detailed guideline on doing it successfully.

That's not what they're saying. They're saying llms are getting so good at revealing vulnerabilities that they have to put focus and effort on finding and fixing them before external malicious actors do.

Yeah it's faster to find a bug than to refactor a whole codebase to fix it, they're still using llms to speed up fixing the bugs. If you believe them, anyway.

I do. Their software stacks were so shit and bloated and had many owners with different visions and understanding of what code does what and why and they rely on being closed source to survive penetration, I do believe llms are finding vulnerabilities left and right, and focused refactoring to address legacy human slop can take time, even for a super competent llm that does it correctly in one shot.

Really old software had feature long time ago, new software has it now. Somebody 17 years from now is going to respond to post about multiple cursor support in nowaydudeland with "Wayland got had this in 2026"
