Unless they give devs full control to train the model specifically for their vision of the game I don’t see how this can truly compliment their work

The point is for developers to have control over their own vision. If you want to be running a real time AI generated visual for a "pick your own adventure" document then I don't think "video game" is the proper term for it nor should it be corroded into that.

Creative works are dictated by the Authors and makers. If you want something tailored to your specific taste go make it, don't expect others to serve it for you.

It is reasonable to want a good product that makes you happy, I get and support that too. Games are meant to be fun.

But games also have another nature, which is creativity and artistic expression. When you buy a game copy you're just witnessing another person's or teams vision and you either appreciate or you don't. It's like paying tickets to see a painting or art installation, at least in part.

You can absolutely go see the mona Lisa while wearing distortive funny effect glasses (mods), all the power to you for doing so.

But DLSS isn't just that. It's the guy who was sponsoring the painter now demand that he not only uses his own BrightColor TM. dyes, (which is mostly reasonable) but they are now saying the artist should give Mona Lisa a wider smile and colorful blouse or paint a 2nd version with those attributes because "people find it pretty".

DLSS 5 is genAI pushed into gaming and genAI in art is terribly problematic anti-humanist process that kills the creative soul of human work and promotes whatever the capitalist free market considers "good" at the time while oppressing anything alternative as an instrument of the elite class.

It sounds like we are on the same side of this so I'm not sure why you're arguing with me. If they give this control to the users instead of the developers, you can use it or not use it at much as you want, instead of having entire games irreversibly ruined by it.

DLSS 5 looks horrendous but let’s not pretend gamers haven’t been able to reshade and mod the everloving shit out of games for decades. Saying it’s not a real game because someone decided they wanted to slap on a cel-shade filter or turn the art director’s carefully crafted dragon into Thomas the Tank Engine isn’t really a defensible position.

I'm not going against mods simply because this level of control I'm taking about exists. Gamers want thomas so they make Thomas as an option, everyone is happy.

The problem with DLSS 5 is that it's being marketed as an upscaling or even "an improvement" which is frankly insulting for everyone who works on the art and visuals of a game.

Yes, optional. As in, the developers have the option to optimize their games despite publishers pushing for cheaper development and shorter deadlines knowing they can get away with instead adding proprietary black box generative models. And you, as the consumer, have the option to either pay inflated prices for a product launched on paper or to instead choose to enjoy motion sickness while playing a game at 20 frames a second.

Almost every game on pc has video settings presets, if the options are too much, you can always use those.

Instead of focusing on what is "too much settings", i prefer game studios taking the approach of the settings of e.g. Assassin's Creed Origins. Not only do you get the usual presets in the menu, but also some stats to your performance. E.g. how much VRAM is used/available. What's your GPU and CPU load, RAM usage,... And for every setting you hiber over and change, you will get a (cumulative) prediction in those graphs how this combination of setting will affect which part of the system. That way you can tweak the settings more easily to your preference and your system. You may not be able to get a decent frame rate with higher poly models, but you might have enough VRAM to afford higher res textures and get better image quality that way. Having denser crowds might affect CPU load more than GPU load, so your GPU might not be the bottleneck of that feature and so on.

I’m with you, but I think they (large studios/publishers) may have that data anyways from their QA or when checking system requirements. They do not need to be completely precise. Even something like „well we’re using 6 GB VRAM, 4GB of that are textures. Increasing texture quality to the next tier is roughly a 25% increase in texture size, so it will probably take an additional 1GB of VRAM“ can go a long way to help gauging whether that setting might be bad for performance or not on your machine

Personally, I’d much rather have the choice than just have whatever gets slapped together and shipped by a dev. I'm particularly grateful having recently gone to 3440x1040p, just how many game support it and the options I can tweak to get my personal sweet spot of looks vs frames.

If there’s no low, med or high options that a lot of games ship with; no shame in searching “ best graphics settings” or some variant. I still do for some games when I can’t be arsed or when the performance sucks due to a random post processing effect being borked and tanking performance. Games are more complex than ever and with essentially endless permutations of hardware configurations, the graphics settings tend to reflect that.
