[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 118 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Apparently this was in Detroit in 2020. A similar thing happened a few years earlier in West Seattle. Black guy went into a Wa. Mutual to deposit a check and the bank people thought it "didn't look right" so they called the cops and charged him with check fraud. During the week or so he spent in jail, he lost his job, got evicted from his apartment, and gf broke up with him. He sued the bank and it took a couple years but he won.

[–] Rubanski@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Wow, the gf is a massive bitch for leaving him during this absolute shit show

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Maybe their relationship wasn't on a firm foundation if that broke them up.

Evaluating a person based on a single fact about them is the kind of keen, thorough, analytical thinking that gives me faith in democracy!

If you found out the person you were dating was a criminal (according to the authorities), would you stick around?

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 9 points 1 day ago

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Under an acuusation? No, needs to be proven first before anything.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

If they're being accused of defrauding banks... Maybe?

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

At least until a conviction, yes.

Racism is everywhere not just in America, it is just hotter issue on USA, because maybe leaders does fight it and it upsets racists. In other countries (especially more homogenous) it is often accepted by everyone as normal.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

It's only racism if it comes from the USA region of North America. Otherwise, it's just sparkling discrimination.

The bank clerk herself was a black woman, and the man is an Air Force veteran… The onion couldn’t make this shit up

Sauntore Thomas when the bank called the cops:

[–] perishthethought@piefed.social 62 points 2 days ago (2 children)

From the article:

But when he tried to open a savings account for the money at the Livonia branch, staff said they would need to verify the cheques. The assistant bank manager - herself a black woman - went to a backroom, before returning and telling Mr Thomas their team member who verifies cheques was not there. She allegedly asked him how he got the money.

Ten minutes later - after Mr Thomas said he would wait in the lobby for the staff member to return - four police officers arrived.

I'm taking bets the asst. bank manager was told she had to ask by someone else behind the scenes. Then that someone called the cops.

WTH is a beat cop going to do though? How would they know if the check is legit or not? They should have deposited it and waited to see if the funds came in.

A small tidbit :

Police began an investigation into Mr Thomas for fraud during the incident, but have since closed the case.

So non only the police didn't need to be involved but they also tried to find fraud charges instead of helping the victim of racism...

So is other people's racism like an infinite money glitch?

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Yes. Except in my mind it's a monkey's paw deal. You win endless discrimination lawsuits, but you just end up with a bunch of checks no bank will cash.
