Doesn't this only apply where they're invasive?

Surely they come from somewhere where they were part of the food chain?

This is the Washington metro area on the US East Coast; spotted lanternflies have been invasive here for years.

As I understand it they’re originally from East Asia somewhere.

Yup, these guys just exploded here in Virginia this year. We cut down a tree of paradise that was COVERED in them. Whatever is being done to slow their spread isn't nearly enough.

Spotted lantern fly. Highly invasive. No predators.

Killing them does little though. They're bugs. They outnumber us.
