Fun fact: you probably know that wireless earbuds have a primary/secondary relationship, where the audio source connects to just one earbud, which then relays it to the second. Interestingly, this isn't the case anymore with Bluetooth LE audio, where the phone manages the connection to each earbud independently. even though the phone does more work, it uses less power because the codec is more efficient
Curiously, I've had a pair of cheap earbuds that I typically used one at a time, putting it in the case when the battery expired and switching to the other. Pretty sure neither the earbuds nor my aging phone support BLE. However, there might've been some shenanigans with the case being a Bluetooth device of its own, presumably relaying to the buds.
