I think the real difference between moths and butterflies, from my own observations, is that moths will stow their wings backwards like most other insects when not in use, while butterflies will just fold them upwards, not moving them tailwards at all.

I see a plenty of both, the brown moth in the pic would likely lay its wings down flat like that against the bark of a tree to hide.
