Why let them go? English is my native language and I always prefer subtitles when available.

I was at the level where I perfectly understood written language cause of the time spent in the internets and IT. Could speak too. But when someone spoken a bit faster or with less clarity it was all coming in as gibberish and I frequently had to ask to repeat several times.
