We used to make jokes about test tube babies as kids, for some reason. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The idea is rooted in eugenics. Scientists fertilized a egg with a sperm, bypassing "survival of the fittest" in the womb, which somehow makes the genes "weaker", which somehow makes the resulting child less valid
Huh. You're saying the ones mocking the idea of test tube babies were the eugenicists?
I've understood it as test tube babies being mocked because of the idea that someone is brewing up their own genetically modified baby, like a eugenicist's wet dream. Think GATTACA.
