Back when I started Linux, poking at the system was fun and exciting (also you had to poke at the system anyway if you wanted to run anything). Now, I just want it out of the way and convenient.

I understand that newcomers might feel that they want to touch everything because it's all new and shiny, but I think the OS ought to be a creature of the shadows.
