I seem to remember needing currency to buy goods and services needed to stay alive.

But you don't need to hold on to it for decades.

Actually you do, for when you retire and no longer work, or have an emergency, or for any other reason. There's a difference when a billionaire hordes, and a normal citizen. Currency still needs to hold value.

Some in a checking account, sure, but that should be a small amount that isn't significantly affected by inflation.

Retirement funds typically aren't bills stuffed in mattresses, and if they are, that's on you.

Currency ultimately funds retirement accounts.

Sure, but not currency that has been stuffed into mattresses for decades.

It goes into the retirement account and is immediately converted to something else that is a hedge against inflation. Typically, some kind of productive asset or proxy thereof, like stocks or real estate.

I get that physically hoarding actual paper currency is dumb. That is not how I read the original post though.

Well okay, if you're not stuffing your mattress, then what does it matter what a certain amount of a currency might have bought in the past? You can't time travel to spend it.
