I seem to remember needing currency to buy goods and services needed to stay alive.
But you don't need to hold on to it for decades.
Actually you do, for when you retire and no longer work, or have an emergency, or for any other reason. There's a difference when a billionaire hordes, and a normal citizen. Currency still needs to hold value.
If you are saving for retirement, you should keep your savings in the market, which would make your $100 worth significantly more than in 2013
Emergency funds should be small enough that changes in value due to inflation over more than a decade cause negligible financial hardship
