Right, I'm not really sure how their product keys would work, without a "product lock", for the key to fit into. That's probably not a great metaphor, point being, of course they would always have needed and used something like this to lock your OS to your device using the product key, right?
This is a great video from one of the devs about the window product activation and how much they thought about how they'd determine how many changes to a system was a new device. Idk how windows works now, but it was fairly common back in the day to upgrade often, and you didn't need a new Microsoft license most of the time when doing so.
Yeah Windows Activation has probably has more programming time burned on it over the decades than all of NASA lol
