Wild how Crunchyroll started as a piracy site, worked its way to becoming legal, and is now the very thing it was created as an opposition to.
I’m not sure that narrative makes sense. There wasn‘t really a thing it was opposed to in most cases. Not that I‘m aware of. There simply wasn‘t a licensed platform for Anime other than the few shows on less than a hand full TV channels, mostly at night. Early anime fansub sites simply did what anime studios or TV networks didn‘t care to do: Localizing a wide variety of Anime in the first place.
