They weren't consciously making it a trans allegory. And, the studio would never have accepted it if that was all it was. In retrospect it's obvious that that was a major influence in the story they were telling. And, they're happy that in the present people are interpreting it that way. But, it wasn't as intentional as people like to claim, and that's far from the only possible interpretation.
